I've had my car for 18 months without a problem but yesterday I got in and the oil low warning came up. Checked the dipstick and it was indeed low, filled it up so it was fine on the dipstick but still the warning was showing. Drove, a nervous, 200 miles and parked up overnight. Checked this morning and the level is fine (no leaks etc) but the warning still shows up when I start the car.

My question: is this a problem with the sensor as there seems to be plenty of oil? I have another 200 miles to do today and am obviously a bit concerned about driving with a warning light showing.

As this is my first problem I'm a bit in the dark on these matters and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

The dipstick is a direct physical method of checking how much oil is in the engine so it can't lie (as long as you've checked it on level ground and allowed time for the oil to drain back into the sump). It's not subject to electronic quirks so I personally wouldn't worry.

Totally agree with Hanswuk. If the dipstick say's that the level is correct, then it is. Warning lights are for guidance and to warn you of POTENTIAL problems. Just get it back to the dealer to sort out the warning light but fear not about the oil level itself.
