Put a litre of oil in but warning light still comes on when starting car ! Anyone else having trouble reading oil level ? How much oil should be in the engine ? Should i put another litre in ? Car is running fine, did a 350 mile journey at the weekend and warning light didnt come on, only this morning

I had a petrol RCZ and the dipstick was very difficult to read.
Be careful not to overfill it. You can damage things, or at the least foul the spark plugs. Also, unless you're au fait with servicing, you're not going to get the excess out.

I'd do my utmost to read the level correctly before dumping more in, especially given the light probably won't go straight out at the correct level anyway.

Be very, very careful running it low. It WILL damage the timing gear (I'm assuming it's petrol)

As I have stated before, the dipstick is pretty much useless to ascertain the correct level in the engine. Many others will give advice on it but it really is a crap shoot, which is a crying shame given how vital the level appears to be for the longevity of the engine.

The method above is quite simple to check the level correctly

My dipstick has a 'bullet point' empty
tip end then blank shaft up to a nodule full marker, when serviced the oil was up to the blob nodule Full, when it drops a little I put a drop in cold engine then check later cold. Looks like there may be two kinds of dipstick as Mini cooper has thp engine
