Normal Brake Disc Wear

Hi,

I have an 11 plate Petrol 156 with 19" wheels and have been suffering from the dreaded "Clonk" sound so having had enough, I took it into my local Peugeot Dealer to have a diagnosis performed on this and other things including a bit of wobble from the wheels at speed.

To my surprise, one of the things they have come back with is that my brake discs need replacing as they are close to the limit apparently. The measurements they gave me were 25mm but I don't know what tolerances to expect and having only done 14k, it seems a little soon to be needing these replaced.

They are doing "a special" so will replace discs and pads on the front all in for £200.

Is this normal to need new discs after so few miles?
If so, £200 sounds quite good to supply and fit ... am I right?

Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob.

Well, £200 doesn't sound extortionate, but, you shouldn't need them replacing anyway at such low mileage. I would get onto PUG UK and ask them for advice. They should be going part way towards paying for the repair if it is actually needed as these parts shouldn't need replacing yet. I would make sure the dealer keeps the worn parts and let's you have them so you have some evidence for Peugeot.

Similar circumstances with my last car, a Renault Megane CC, and after a little haggling, eventually Renault paid half the cost of the parts, as they said they should have lasted twice the mileage they had done. They wouldn't contribute towards the labour though.

As for the "clunk" is this when going over smaller bumps? I recently had my front suspension top mounts replaced FOC as there was a notice out by Peugeot that a modified part needed to be fitted to my car, and I had a "clunk" when going over rough road surfaces, bumps etc.

The worn parts still belong to you by law. If you ask the garage to give any parts removed from your car to you they have to comply.

Thanks for the replies guys ...

I think I will try speaking to PUK as even though the car is out of warranty, this isn't acceptable wear and tear as I thought. Also good point about asking for the replaced parts back

Regarding the "Clonk" ... I've got a few suspension noises, really difficult to explain but here goes;
Reversing off my drive and turning wheels to the right makes a juddering sound and at lock going down the ramp bit between drive and road I often get a "twang" sound that appears to be from the near side and is probably spring related.

Driving along the motorway, sometimes changing lanes the steering over just the cats eyes feels like it pulls the car a little or gets bogged down - so not smooth and needs an adjustment from the steering wheel.

Now for the "Clonk" ... more like a rattle I guess, not so obvious at speed - maybe just can't hear it so much? but at lower speeds its from the top on the driver side and any bump or mild pothole makes this annoying rattle and pulling onto my drive and into my work car park at low speed it's really evident and almost embarrassing to hear
This same rattle sound (I think) is also sometimes heard when switching off the engine - almost like a last vibration wobble if that makes sense? The sound feels like it's coming from something loose at the top of the suspension but I can't get anywhere near being able to see that so can't verify anything.

The posts regarding a PUK bulletin on clonks and other posts here make me feel fairly confident that replacing those might just fix it but even though I bought the car with a 12 month Platinum RAC warranty ... guess what? ... yep, this isn't covered

I am talking to the independent dealer I bought the car from back in July last year and they haven't flatly refused to look into this but I'm not sure how specialist this might be and if they would be willing to change something like this on a guess that it might fix the issue.

Really annoying as I love this car and apart from this it's absolutely fantastic and makes me smile every time I drive it.

It does sound as if it might be suspension top mount related. It might be worth a trip back to your local Peugeot dealership to ask about the notice for replacing the front top mounts with a modified part.
I might be way off beam here, as the notice might only relate to a certain batch of vehicles, I don't know as I never saw the paperwork, I was just told by my dealership about the Pug notice relating to my car when I took it in complaining of a clonk from the top of the front suspension area. The modification solved the problem for me.

As for a noise on full lock when reversing off your drive, I still get that, but I think it's just the stiffness of the suspension, coupled with the low profile tyres, and the fact that it's on full lock. I don't think it's actually a problem, just a consequence of the cars design.

The pulling when crossing lanes has to be tyre related, otherwise it's would do it when on normal Tarmac, so if it's just doing it crossing lane markings, I'm pretty sure it's down to the tyres.

The noise when turning off the engine? Could be engine mount(s) exhaust rattle or I suppose those suspension top mounts.

I would be pretty much annoyed if I had bought a "platinum" warranty from anyone, and then found out that the first thing that goes wrong isn't covered. I would look into what is covered, and ask, if you take it to a peugeot dealership to get it fully checked out / potentially repaired, are they going to pay for the repairs, if they aren't prepared to investigate the probelms further themselves.

Hope you get to the bottom of the problem(s) and that it doesn't take too long or prove too costly

Some success

Following the advice given here, I contacted PUK and put my case forward for the car being out of warranty but having done so little mileage and lo and behold, they agreed and arranged with the local dealer to get my suspension top mounts replaced at their cost.

I've had this done but the rattle is less obvious but still there  , however, speaking to the dealer about this, they took the car back in and tightened up all the front subframe bolts according to their torque specs and it has totally fixed the annoying rattle

Now to get the original dealer to get the brakes sorted and I'm a very happy bunny.

Car drives lovely now so thank you Peugeot UK for being so great about this and providing great customer service even though officially I could have been rejected
