2014 rcz with 48k on the clock, first went into limp mode with engine problem message. Got a code reader which showed misfire on cylinder 4. Changed plugs and coils but problem still remained. Went into Peugeot dealer who ran a compression test on cylinders and found practically zero compression on cylinder 4. All others are fine 150psi. They say the next step is to remove the head and investigate but if it turns out to be carbon build up it won’t be covered by extended warranty. I had no warning, ie steady loss of power, just this sudden failure. Is it likely to be carbon build up?

Direct injection engines (read, Peugeot RCZ petrol in this instance) do suffer from carbon build up, as the fuel does not wash the valves as in a non DI engine.

So it could well be yours needs a walnut blast. Although, I am just linking your issues with what I know.
I'm not a mechanic.

Thanks. I did see about that but Peugeot dealer wants to remove the head to investigate. If it’s a proper fault it will be covered by the warranty, if it’s just carbon build up it won’t be

Codes indicating a misfire on cylinder 4 are also known to indicate a failing High Pressure Fuel Pump.

I am no mechanic, so I don’t know how that would link to a lack of pressure in that cylinder, but I do know members on here that have tried various solutions having had this code, replacing coils etc, only to find a replacement hpfp did the trick. Not cheap, but definitely covered under an extended warranty.

Yes DKZ is right a misfire on number 4 cylinder does point to a failing HP fuel pump but if your dealer has done the compression test then it could possibly be carbon build up but not having any previous problems sounds suspicious, surely before removing the head a look at the intake valves with a endoscope style camera would be wise. :eusa-think: if it is ascertained that it’s carbon build up some mini specialists will walnut clean without removing the head for around £400.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you for your help. I will update in due course. Will definitely suggest the endoscope to the dealer.

So. Garage have stripped the head off and can’t find anything obvious at all wrong. So if they put it all back together I am hit with the Labour bill and the problem most likely still remaining. Angry doesn’t really cover it! They dismissed my suggestion that it could be the high pressure fuel pump, on account of the compression test showing no compression in the cylinder.

These are some pics I’ve just taken. Surely they can’t claim that this is Carbon build up?? Looks very clean to me!

The carbon build up would be on the top side of the valves your photos are only showing underneath. I just can’t believe they don’t know what the problem is :eusa-think: no compression at all is a major failure somewhere.

Ah, i hope the inside of the valves are as clean as the outside then! Can they not just whip them out and look? Or am I simplifying it too much? They don’t seem to be in any hurry whatsoever.

You just have to look down the inlets to see the top of the valves I can’t believe they’ve removed the head without checking first!

I have lost all faith and ready to go to war if they try charging me 20 plus hours of labour for it. They are saying now that they haven’t set any time aside until Friday to carry on working on it and will probably start checking the bottom end!! I asked if they had even removed the valves yet, to which they replied no but that might be the next job!! I assumed that taking it to a Peugeot dealership would be best, but I have certainly learnt my lesson.

Bloody hell they sound like a right outfit! I would give Peugeot UK customer service a call and see if they can have a word with the dealer.

Latest part of the comedy sketch. Rang them Friday afternoon to see what they had done to the vehicle, seeing as that was the day they had set aside time to work on it. The service manager informed me that when they attempted to remove the valves from the cylinder head for inspection, they realised they didn’t have the right tool and have had to order one!!! They can’t tell me when the tool will arrive, so they don’t know when they can next work on the car. It’s coming on a month now they have had it. A Peugeot main dealer! I’m past the point of anger now, I just have to laugh!

I think an email to Peugeot UK detailing the course of events is in order, followed by a call to see what they intend to do about it. It’s their name on the line & if they give franchises out, they need to ensure the garage is keeping standards up.

I sent a letter last week, detailing everything to date, but that was before this latest debacle! Unfortunately I can’t find an email address to send all the details to. Still waiting for a response from the letter. It would be difficult to list everything in a phone call so would far rather send a detailed email.

Latest update! Just had a phone call from the dealership to update me on when the tools will be arriving. Apparently there are 3 tools they need. Two of them will be here this Thursday, meaning 4 weeks and one day after the car first went in. The other tool they can’t get until December 11th!!!!! I’m not even kidding! They are now trying to see if they can borrow some tools from somewhere. I need to get an email address for Peugeot so that I can document all of this.

I find it beyond ridiculous that a Peugeot dealership doesn’t have the tools it needs to work on a Peugeot car.
