Hi all,

So our old 2005 Mercedes A Class died after 220,000 miles. I needed to get the wife something similar, but everything was too low, too impractical, too small or too big. So I showed her the RCZ which I have liked for years. For some reason she leapt at it - bearing in mind that she said the DS3 was too low….

So we picked up this 80,000 mile 2010 one for £2,600. Timing chain seems fine, oil seemed dirty despite being changed in September, so I changed it; I suspect the garage pumped out the old oil rather than draining it. Enormous fun to drive and just went through a new MOT. She does smoke sometimes a bit after idling so I suspect I will be doing valve stem seals or turbo or something soon. Its not smoking much and not using much oil either. Does anyone know most likely cause of smoking after idling (blueish) on a 80,000 mile RCZ? It’s a future problem I think, but nice to get an understanding of it early.

Anyway I did this video, it’s probably a bit crap.

The Peugeot RCZ 200 THP - a fun cheap practical cool car?

It’s usually the valve guide stem seals that cause a puff of blue smoke while idling in traffic, if You can live with it just keep an eye on the oil level and top up as required,

I’ve changed the valve stem seals without removing the cylinder head if you are mechanically minded, you will need a compressor!

Hi, thanks for the info. I do have a compressor. Just watched a very long video on the compressor method on a Mini Cooper engine - does not look too bad.

i will monitor oil consumption for now I think. I guess may as well do the timing chain when I do that, but I think that will be a next year job as I have a ton of other stuff to fix still on my other car.

Blue smoke after idling is due to the valve stem seals or piston rings. To distinguish one from the other, a compression test would be necessary. If compression is low the problem is in the rings.

When the engine is idling, the vacuum is strong inside the cylinder, and this causes it to suck in oil, which is then burned when accelerating.

Hi all,
Well, it let me down… but thanks to some of the threads on here, I got it fixed whilst stuck in France on holiday…
I have forgiven it by the way, hard not too after taking it through some of my favourite twisty roads over there.

Saw this over the weekend. At least you are handy enough to have got the job done. Bit of a ‘mare all the same.

Yes, it was a struggle to get myself into the mindset of fixing at the time, but the test drive after was enough to make me forgive the car. i have no idea what the RCZ R is like, but this one just feels so balanced and fun.
