Hi again,

standing in front of the car with the top cover removed You will see the 2 cam shafts lay left to right parallel to each other.

On the left is the chain and you will see the top guide over the top of the chain that runs between the 2 cams.
(if its still there  )

Its function is to stop chain slap and ensure the chain stays taught and therefore the distance stays stable.
The chain guide is a an aluminium plate, held in place by 2x m6 bolts and that supports an nylon channel.

It should be the same front and rear, no cracks, no bits missing, no damage or broken off.

Have a look and come back to be directly ........ I will talk you through whats next, either way.
Hey robrac. Sorry to infringe on you. But Seen u appear to be the wise knowing master I was wondering if you could cast your eyes over the diagnostic report I had done at Peugeot. It should be near bottom of thread. Thanks

Yeah the pages seem long but I think they just tested everything cz quite a few things are reporting 0 faults. So I think it was a.system all check and a few things have flagged up

Jesus, £100 for a diagnostic. Don't you have anyone local with planet you could just have bunged a 4 pack of lager to - to get the same result?

If I charged £100 every time I scanned someone's car I'd be rich.

This was actually scanned by AA before I took it in, but dealerships are going to want to diagnose it themselves and not go off the word of others.

FORGOT TO MENTION: My car is still at dealers as they said it wasn't ready. Technician said worse case scenario it's the Cam shaft and it will be expensive. Can anyone explain why the cam shaft will be expensive / what they will actually be doing? Not sure if they are taking advantage or not?

I doubt the AA would use Planet, so a correct Peugeot diagnostic test would be advisable.

Well at least I know it's legit. Do you have any idea what the technician means by "worse case scenario it's the cam shaft" will I need a new cam shaft as I'm sure they are pretty hefty things are they prone to breaking

I just doubt it’s a camshaft, never heard of one having to be replaced on one of these engines :eusa-think: I’m still of the opinion it’s the timing kit that needs replacement.

if You need to ask as to where the top guides are your just better letting a dealer look at it (no offence meant)if the top guide has broken up it’s not just a matter of replacing this part the whole timing kit needs replacement your Peugeot dealer should charge around £500 to do this including all the parts.
No offence taken. Thank you for your help. What is in a timing kit and could I get this job done at an independent garage to save a bit as dealers are always more for.same job?

It does sound suspiciously like the timing chain. I think it’s @ £500 - £600 at a dealers. If you don’t know what it is, you need a decent garage to sort it for you. There are also quite a few reports on here of camshaft sensors failing, so it could just be a faulty sensor. I haven’t heard of a camshaft failing on a Z before.

The short on the bootlock is a known fault. Water ingress here can throw up all kinds of errors on the Z. This should be a straightforward fix for a Pug dealer.

The headlamp issue should be a similar thing for them, a straightforward fix once they know exactly where the fault is.

I agree that Robrac is likely to shed more light on the Camshaft issue.

UPDATE:

So I finally had car back today and I spoke with the service manager. He said was only going to charge £50 for diagnostic in the end and then I didn't charge anything in end. When I questioned what diagnostic was he said it's to pull codes and do "basic checks" which are check car has engine oil / no loose hoses and a couple other things. My argument was since AA already pulled the codes that a full diagnostic surely wasn't needed. Since he didn't charge I belive he wasn't doing something right. He told me worse case scenario it will be £4,000!!!!. He said it will be 2-3 hours labour (£100 per hour) to strip down the engine and find problem. Then another 2-3 hours to put engine back together if I just want to take it away. I began to press him on that "say I decide to go ahead with the engine strip and then it needs a new timing kit, if this doesn't resolve the problem, since it is a misdiagnosis from yourselves any further repairs will be covered by you the dealer?" In so many words he said No and that basically they need to do A (possibly timing chain kit) then B if that doesn't work (which seems to be the "de-coke" you all spoke about) , which in the way Peugeot do it "Can take hours!!" According to him. So it seems the £4,000 was just an open ended bill of them being able to throw parts at it until the get it right. A little stumped in what to do next as who has a spare £4,000 I may have to try a local independent garage.

Independent Peugeot specialist should be able to use the PP2000 system and be far cheaper than a main dealer.

They may know even more than the the actual main dealers as they can sometimes have to come up with ways to overcome problems without the supposedly backup of Peugeot themselves.

For a decoke, try a mini dealer.
I hear they're pretty good at that.

Hey so do you think that this is best to take to a Peugeot specialist compared to a good local garage? Just trying to find out pros and cons

Thanks again..bit of a dumb question but to find a specialist is it just a matter of Googling Peugeot specialist near me? Or do I need to find a garage with some type of certification?

Thanks
