like a few others, my oil light came on, I had difficulty reading the dipstick, topped up the engine, after a couple short drives the oil warning turned off. My concern now is that I don’t think the oil was a low as I originally thought and I’m worried I’ve over filled. Very hard to see, but the oil line reached where the red marker is. It was measured after the car sat on flat ground over night. What are your thoughts on if this is too much and should I book with a mechanic asap to get it drained? On a side note, my warning log now says “oil is okay”…anyone else a little confused by that message? Why is it not “oil is excellent” or “oil starting to deplete”. Give it me to straight! Hah. Anyway would be great to hear your thoughts, thank you.

Yes. That is too much.

I would suggest do not drive the car until the oil is at the suggested level.

Usually it would be fine if you overfilled around 0,5 centimeter above the ball, but anything more is too much. It's something a lot of us did once in this car since the stick is absolute horseshit to read. To be on the safe side, remove some oil yourself (oil container is easily accessible under the car (you'll have to some plastic undertray). Do not remove the nut completely, since you'll never get it to fit unless you take out all the oil. After you remove enough oil so its at the desired level, just tighten the plug. Clean the plug and the surrounding area. Leave the car overnight, and if it leaks oil, you'll need to replace the metal seal under the plug (best done at the mechanic). If it does not leak, it will be okay until the next oil change.

Thank you, I really appreciate your response and will take your advice. You may have saved me a lot of trouble. I wish there was a way to give gold to you like on Reddit! I hope this virtual medal will suffice:🥇

I removed a touch of oil using a pump from an empty soap container joined onto some plastic tubing. Just stuck it down the dip stick hole. Took a while but worked.
I saw a similar method while using Mechanic Google:
Glad to have your response as confirmation the method works, thanks.

easy way to check dipstick just lay it flat on a piece of kitchen roll and you'll see the level quite clearly

You can buy a cheap oil extractor from eBay, I use one a boat I have with an inboard Ford engine as on boats virtually impossible to get to the drain plug.
