£850 with admiral multicar for my RCZ (£620) and the wife's Fiesta (£230) for 2x 25 year olds; one with no no claims (me) and one with seven! Both insured on both cars - quite good I thought!

Ok so my insurance is up on April 20th and I have been with Admiral for the last two years. However, a look around on comparison websites has shown a number of insurers that will beat the renewal quote I have been given by them. I am going to contact them and see if they will meet them. If not then I am off. Now, my question is this, the first two cheapest results beat Admiral by over £200. However, they are not big name insurers. In fact I have never heard of either of them. The cheapest is a group called 'The Insurance Factory'. A quick google suggests that they have been around since 1974 and they claim to be specialists for modified, imported and performance vehicles. My RCZ always comes up as being modified because of the air filter and non oem alloys. Now...do you think that it is safe enough to go with them?! Generally I would go for the first reputable/big name on the list, however, that's Kwik Fit and I'm not happy with their hidden extras which actually doesn't make them that much cheaper than my renewal quote. This also stands true for the next several big names.

Mine was £550 included protected NCD, not bad for a 26 year old boy racer (before the law changes!!!) and that was with Aviva, after reluctantly digging deeper than the comparison websites.
Personally the way I see insurance is that it is a legal requirement for something I hope I don't need to use so I would go for cheaper ones but still be cautious of the absolute cheapest ones so if I were in your position mrrizzle I would look into the "Insurance Factory" on google etc, have a look at feedback/customer complaints etc, have a look for some of the other companies who aren't on comparisons too as you may be pleasantly surprised too :)
Good luck, and I am in no way jealous of the insurance search which I can avoid until December!!

Thanks Newton. I'm gonna give a few others Adrian Flux and the likes a go too that aren't on these comparison site a go too. If this Insurance Factory bunch are still the cheapest then I will be checking their credentials and accreditation and see how to proceed. I don't mind doing the shopping around too much because I like that feeling of having gotten a good deal.

I've heard some right horror stories about Kwik fit Rizz!!

They're amongst companies that insist on "repair rather than replace where possible" (so they like fillers!) ...others include Sheilas Wheels, Esure (must remember the rest) now that comes from one of my closest pals who owns Autospray in BoD, so pretty much the oracle in insurers and who's best to deal with. He'd recommend AA, Direct Line, Aviva, Admiral, Sainsburys (who I'm with - might be worth a check seen as we're local, so premiums should be comparable).
You need a good broker so that you can have hassle free service :)

just by the way, my insurance here in Oz for the Z wasn't really any increase on my previous 10 year old beemer.

that was one of my deciding factors... I was expecting a hefty quote from the insurance company, but was rather surprised at the offer, so hey, I ended up with the Z.

That's helpful to know actually Donna. I'm going to see what AA can do as I have a Silver membership with them anyway. I have never made a claim (*touch wood*) and can't understand how insurers can provide such vastly different quotes. I'll look into the others that you suggested too. I do want to cancel my gap insurance with Peugeot but I'm not sure that that's actually possible. I was foolish in taking it from them initially to be quite honest. I think new car excitement and a degree of fear instilled by the stealership got to me.

It is an insurance policy that you can take out when you purchase a new car. The policy pays out if your car is stolen or written off. It covers the gap between the cost of a new replacement vehicle (identical to original) and the payout from your insurance policy. They are taken out for a set amount of money for a prescribed period of time.

Thanks for that. I suppose it is around, but the policy from the insurance company may have a new for old option or options like full price or market price, but, as mentioned above, you get what you pay for. Options are options.

My dealer didn't offer anything like 'gap'.

Ok...after a bit of research into this car insurance factory mob it is clear that they are to be avoided at all costs. There are pages and pages of horror stories so I'm not going to touch them. Direct Line seems to be the cheapest reputable outfit for me so I'll see if Admiral will match them and if not then I am offski. One thing with Direct Line though, they don't actually ask about mods so I haven't at any point had to disclose about a non oem air filter, grille, alloys, exhaust. Seems odd but if they didn't ask then I can't see how I can be expected to have disclised it. What would you guys say is the value of my car though? I put in the buying price of something equivocal used and estimated 16.5k.

Do you have to disclose the air filter as it doesn't improve performance or anything. And what do you mean by your alloys? They are Peugeot wheels are they not?

A air filter is not a performance enhancing modification and rcz1 your on the money solstice wheels are OEM'S

And by the way i filled in a form when insuring the ST and said it had satnav as optional extra the computer regognised this as a modification and the only quote i got was for £10,000 :wtf:

dont touch "Quote me happy" as they are a online "ONLY" INSURANCE COMPANY which when you want to alter the insurance or change cars it doesnt have all the solutions on its site and no human to speak too "l robot"...

I had an issue back in 2009 with an insurance company. My favourite lady had a minor bump in my car. When the car went into the insurers nominated repairer, I got a telephone call to say that my policy had been cancelled as I had failed to inform them of the "modifications" to my car. I said but it's not been modified, it is as it was when collected from Vauxhall. They said that pay them a fee (I forget how much £100ish) and they would overlook my error and pay the repair bill. My "modifications" were optional extras bought from and fitted by Vauxhall at their factory!!! I now always send a full list of all my optional extras and the price that I paid for them as and when I renew my insurance.

They are legalised con artists in my opinion.

You have to disclose any modification that is not fitted as standard.l regardless of whether or not the affect or enhance performance. The reason is quite simply that they are cost options in the case of the alloys etc and would cost more if you required a replacement. Technically an air filter can result in an increase in performance even if it is negligible. However, again it is not oem and is therefore categorised as a modification.

Completely agree with you closing statement Ron. That is EXACTLY what they are!

"OPTIONS ARE NOT MODIFICATIONS" so if i where to tell my insurance company of all FACTORY FITTED OPTIONS I HAVE it would cost me More...... than a standard ST3 NO...it wouldnt because i have given them the cars value at the start of the form which would be £3,000 more than a standard ST3 the cars original value is what determines the final cost of insurance.........PEARL PAINT cost's £700 say more than opal so do we all state that on our insurance forms no we dont.......
