G'day,

Having seen these cars back in my youth, they are now cheap enough for me to consider grabbing one as a weekender car.

I have read though the forums and watched a few videos and by all reports they seem to be problematic cars to own and maintain :)

However I'm not put off yet...

I have seen this 1.6 200hp version available and I'm pretty tempted....

Here is the kicker it's in Brisbane, I'm in Townsville (1300 km away)

I'm flying to Brisbane today for work until Friday, do I take the chance, buy the car, miss my flight home and drive the 13000 klm back.

Or am I just asking for trouble here

Here is the car if anyone recognises it or used to own it.

Would love your input to stop me doing something crazy... Or to encourage me to do something crazy

Thanks

I don’t think they are as bad as some people make out. A lot of problems can be sorted cheaply if you know what you are doing. The fault codes can be wrong and send you down the wrong track. As with any car a pre purchase inspection would be a very good idea.

Well, I couldn't resist it,
Thankfully, everything works as it should (couldn't find any electrical gremlins yet)
And it drives great,

Full tank of 98,
Grabbed some oil so I can check on it before the start of each day and off we went.

Didn't get very far tonight as the traffic out of brisbane is hell on a Friday.
200klm down....
Only 1,300 to go

Wish me luck

Well we made it back!

It was a long 13 hour drive on some pretty rough roads but the car managed it without any grumbles and happily sat in cruise control at 110kmh for hours on end.

I on the other hand have rather a numb bum.

Will give her a good clean today and post some pics later on.

So, my mate and I spent today giving here a good clean....

Took him home, got it back on the drive... And then it emptied the coolant... All over the drive..

Lucky it completed the big trip before this happened and glad I was back on my driveway too.

In going to take a wild guess and say thermostat housing, but let's see.

I hope I can find a garage to fix it or that was a very expensive drive home

Bummer. As it failed so catastrophically, must be something apparent. No loose hoses?
Not that I can see from the top down.

Thankfully I have some warranty from the used car dealer, so I will see what comes from that. I won't touch the car until they have responded incase they suggest it was me!
