Just an update on the Gtechniq G1 that I applied to my RCZ when I first got it in October 2010.

G1 is a glass sealant/ water repellent. I applied 3 layers to the windscreen and rear window and one layer to the side windows in October 2010.

The car is usually washed once a fortnight and the windows are washed as normal and dried then I use Meguiars glass cleaner to give them an extra clean.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the rain was not running off the screen as well as it had been doing. Then when I washed the car and sprayed water on the windscreen and back window it was obvious that the G1 had expired. The side windows were still repelling water as normal.

This means that the Gtechniq lasted
19 months and 15,000 miles,
which I'm really pleased with :)
You don't realise what a great job G1 does until it starts to fail.

I've now reapplied G1 to the windscreen and back window (3 layers) and its working really well again in the heavy rain we had a couple of days ago.

So in summary, a great product which performs as the manufacturer states and for a decent price. Apply and forget, that's what you do with G1. It also has the added benefit of stopping ice / frost forming on your windows (unless it's -7C or colder) and if it does you can usually just brush it off with your hand AND no need for windscreen wipers. Mine have barely been used.

When you put 3 layers on:
apply the first layer with a little makeup pad, which comes with G1
Leave for 10 - 15 minutes
Then apply second layer
Leave for 10-15 minutes
Apply third layer
Leave for 10 minutes
Then buff off all residue with a lint free towel.

Use the G2 that comes with G1 to remove the residue if proving difficult to remove.

A tip - if it's still proving difficult to remove, I use my Meguiars glass cleaner to which does a good job of removing the residue, without any drop in performance from G1.

Hi,
I've just ordered some of this and I'm hoping to get a dry enough morning/afternoon to apply it over the next week or so. I'm going to be putting 3 on front and back but not 100% sure if I should do two coats, buff off then apply the third coat or do all 3 coats as above then buff off. Advice seems to differ between the two ways - is there really much difference?

Cheers

Bluez

Cheers RCZ1. I saw it on a forum but I've done a search and cannot find the link now!

Ah well should arrive tomorrow so as soon as this rain stops long enough I'll get out there and get it on. I'll bet as soon as I've done it we get a heat wave!!

Not likely. Just saw the news at lunch time. Looks like this weather will be here for at least another 3 weeks due to the Gulf Stream being in the wrong place !

lol yeah I tried to do it today as we had clear skies. Got one application on and it rained! Managed to buff the majority off before it came down! Tried to do a second coat when it cleared up and guess what, yup it rained again before I could get a second coat finished. Buffed it off and gonna have to wait for a better day.

I've now got squeaky wipers so I think I need to give then a clean with the residue cleaner when it's dry...

Oh RCZ1 - do you use the Mequires NXT Glass Cleaner on your glass with the G1 on?

Yes wipe some of the G2 on the wiper blades and it should stop.

Yes I do still use the Meguiars glass cleaner on the windows when I've washed the car. It doesn't affect the performance of G1.

Hope the rain stops for you soon. :)

ARGH!!! My arms! Finally got round to applying my G1 today. What a barsteward of a job, I was cursing like a trooper by the time I'd finished!!

Had to laugh at the wee vid on youtube that tells you to not leave it more than 15 minutes to cure as it can be difficult to remove. That's an understatement!!! Took me 2 hours just to buff the G2 off! Results do look good though.......

I am NEVER applying that stuff again. If I ever get a window smashed I am going to cry!

Kinda put me off further Gtechniq products if they're all a nightmare to apply like that.........

Yup, it's a bu**er all right! Still...cheaper than a gym membership! I actually opted for a different glass cleaner and polish because found that G4 stuff is horrible to use! Perhaps used sparingly it is better but I'm not a fan!

I had to laugh, sorry.

I've got it down to a fine art now. What I now do is apply the G1 in circular motions up and down the screen and then go back over any high spots to iron them out ie where there appears to be a large amount of product, it's smoothed out. Then when it comes to buff the residue off, it literally takes 5 minutes. Probably not what you want to hear right now but I can assure you, there is an easy way.

Nobody likes a smart ass!!

Matt ... I'll just continue to use Autoglym glass polish and fast glass when I need to. Works fine for me.

Mrizzle, I don't like G4 either. Used a little bit and it was horrible do never use it anymore. There are far better glass polished out there.

I'm glad it's not just me then that thought it was horrible stuff!

Donna - I'm sure your hard work will have paid off no matter which application procedure you employed.
