looking at buying a RCZ, however i think this forum, maybe slightly biased, . I'm asking what is the best and worse, about these cars. I'm looking at the 2.0 HDi version, possibly 2011/12. Is there anything specific i should be looking/asking for?

I have a 2011 diesel and it's never put a foot wrong. The diesel is pretty much bullet proof. The only issue some may have with a diesel is with the DPF. The computer will start beeping if the car is used primarily for short journeys but if the car is used for long haul commutes then this is not a problem. Tyres are expensive and I find my car eats front tyre with that heavy front end. It uses Zero oil between services, and doesn't have any known engine faults unlike the petrol equivalent. It is also very fuel efficent!

One of the few issues common accross the range, - Sills.

Just have a quick look round the jacking points to make sure that the car has been lifted correctly, as the sills have a tendency to buckle/split if the car has not been jacked up correctly.

Other than that, you will wish you had bought one sooner :thumbup:

I also have a 2011 163 Hdi GT.
And I second everything renegade79 said.
Petrol was never an option for me as I have a round 42 mile commute on the m4 daily. And have had diesels for many years.
Whilst keeping an eye on your speed , cause it's got so much torque, in 6th gear from 60mph you can easily reach 2nd phase spoiler deployment with even realising !!! (Apparently) :thumbup:

I have a 2010 hdi. Same as above, no issues. I also have never had a dpf problem. over winter I have only been doing 6 mile trips and the engine hasnt gotten up to temperature before turning it off. Im not saying its not clogging up, but its not as immediate as you might think. I had a long run to manchester so that will have cleared it, but 4-5 months of 6mile a day trips hasnt made it go wrong

One downside to the car is you cant have a nice steady drive. You either develop a heavy foot, or others expect you to have developed one.
Also you may get people at the fuel station saying its a travesty that the car is a diesel.

They gave the car a facelift at the end of 2012 so if you want the new shape you should look for a 2013 plate or newer.

yep I'm aware of the Mk.II facelift version, however i can't justify 20k, give or take on one. Besides, i prefer the wide mouthed front, of the earlier version, as opposed to the 'eyebrowed' facelift..

Has anyone experienced trouble with track rods on the earlier models or is it just a myth that they knock out easily?

Just a myth!!
Also, in relation to your other "sweeping statement", some members on here have sold their rcz's and moved on but still contribute to the forum so there is some evidence to suggest that not everyone on here is biased! Even one of the mods has moved on from his Z!

Re the biased opinions, the point i was making was that the majority here, would be pro RCZ. I wouldn't ask the same question on a mini cooper forum that's a given..if other's have moved on, then perhaps it was out of necessity rather than a distaste for them, hence their views, would be a reflection on how great theirs once was..those that dislike them, simply wouldn't be here surely....

I was after an open and honest, if not biased opinion, from those who have had the joy of owning one, as to what to look out for, pro's and con's, rather than jealous myth's from those who can't afford them, for whatever reason....

The RCZ is not for everyone.
It is a drivers car.
It is not soft, and comfortable and safe, it is edgey and aggressive, and tells you all the time just what it is capeable of.
It urges you to push on, makes you want to drive, really drive, and yet.......

If you can resist, you can lounge, you can relax (almost), you can take time to accept the admiring glances.
You can enjoy the "feel" of the road, smile, almost giggle as you feel those horses under your right foot just waiting to gallop.

The RCZ is Fast, yet it is safe, it is quick, yet it is economical, it is a modern well equipped car, yet underneath it feels like a raw racer.

The RCZ is THE best looking (one of) cars you will come accross on the road.

That's exactly what i was hoping for, along with the odd con, of course, as nothing in this world is perfect, as much as we like it to be...

On the subject of split sills - is there a remedy should one be found with the said defect? I've read somewhere that a 'low profile' trolley jack and a grooved hockey puck, will see you by? Advice please......

This has worked for others but I would not take the chance.
I would go down the route of using the rear differential housing or the front cross-member if possible.

Yeah, it was my post about the low profile trolley Jack & grooved hockey puck, but if you read further, I have not risked using this device, I have used the cross members.

I think the puck will work, but it's a costly experiment if I'm wrong, so I will keep it handy, just in case I can't reach far enough under the car to use the stronger cross members due to a puncture or some other unforeseen circumstance. But other than that it will stay in the box. :eusa-think:
