Gear change indicator

Picked up my car yesterday and loving every minute of it.
Have been going through the manual page by page and came across the section on the gear change indicator. I remember seeing this on the two cars I've test driven before but it doesn't seem to appear on mine.

Anybody know why? (GT 156 by the way.)

It should work, which setting have you got the centre display on, you set this by pressing the end of the wiper arm stalk. There should be 4 settings, off, driving, run 1 and run 2, if in the off position it will come on automatically (fills the screen) telling you to change up (never tells you to change down) if in the other three positions it will appear in the top right hand corner of the screen. I will not always come on if you are pushing it in the gears or going down a hill, it only seems to work as it should with slower driving even telling you to change to 6th if you are in 4th. I hope this helps.

Hi Rob,

This is what I thought. Doesn't come on at all. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the fact that I have the NG4 sat nav installed. I did read somewhere that it can be deactivated and can only be activated by a service centre. (don't know if I'm imagining this or not though as I can't seem to find it anywhere!)

Perhaps you have an impeccable gear change technique and you don't require prompting

I have an BG4 and mine is displayed. Don't change up when you normally would, and it should appear!

Hi Kev.

Not sure on the sat nav how that works, it does sounds like it needs activating - check with the garage.

All, thanks for responses, it would appear that there are mixed answers.

I wonder if Marcus or PeugeotProd know or can find out the answer!!!

I'm embarassed to admit that after 33 years of driving my new gear change indicator has shamed me into admitting that my gear change technique was basically ***p ! Even worse having to admit that my partner was right when continually prompting me to change up in the past. I used to reply 'no good changing up too soon, I'll labour the engine' now I have both the car and him telling me to change up so I'm outnumbered...
My excuse is I like to hear the roar of the engine before I change gear !

For best, most fuel efficient driving then it's fine - you should change up at about 2,000 rpm. But for a bit of torque and acceleration then you need to change up later and it doesn't harm the engine, simply burns fuel.

What's actually worse, and neither your partner nor the indicator take account of, is under-revving, or over-using the clutch. Given the 3rd-4th change is optimal at about 30mph, and anyone in a 30mph zone in traffic will be continually driving at between 25mph and 32mph, what's the right gear?

Janelea - you are giving us female drivers a very bad name

It annoys my husband so much that I can drive more fuel efficient in his car than he can.

When I reach 30mph I change up to 5th gear. This stems from when I owned my Mini Cooper. I found my mpg was very low and then read that if I changed up to 5th when near 30mph it would improve things. And it did  I've done it ever since in every car I drive and it really does increase your fuel consumption. If the speed drops to about 25mph then you obviously have to change down but you can feel the change in engine prompting you to do so.

It will be interesting to see how many mpg I can get out of the RCZ when I get her back but I will have fun finding out

Hi RCZ1, The car may well use less fuel when in 5th gear at 30mph, but 5th gear does not give you any immediate response in acceleration or slowing down should you require to do so. Being in a 30mph zone means that you are in a danger zone and therfore should be in the correct gear for the road and traffic conditions. It is the control of the car that is required in a 30mph zone and not the need to save fuel.

OK I'll really put a spanner in the works for you, I can be driving along at 30mph and in 5th, the fuel is reading a say 48 - 56 mpg, start to go down a hill and the fuel reads about 150 / 160 mpg, change down to 4th and the fuel economy goes up to over 300mpg even topping out at 999mpg, so this tells you 1. you are in the wrong gear 2. the best economy is not always in the higher gear, due to engine speed and load. :wtf:
