Folding mirrors

Hi, can the auto folding and unfolding of door mirrors be deactivated without going to a main dealer ?

They are programmed by computer you could disable them by the fuse but you may lose power to another ancillary on the sane circuit I presume you mean manual operation from the switch ?

The switched operation is done from inside the car on the buttons if you mean to totally disable the overall control of the mirrors I don't believe its possible as they operate on a built in live circuit which is why they open remotely off the signal from the key opening the car & I cannot imagine a MD doing it either the mirrors are a safety feature on the car & fold inwards to protect them from impact damage I just wonder what is the reason?

It say in owners handbook that the auto folding can be deactivated by a authorized dealer, so then you just use the switch when you want to retract them.no safety issues at all !!

I see you want to operate them manually all the time then when you park the car & forget to close them somebody swipes the side of the door & takes the mirror off all the costs paying the dealer will be well worth the expense you realise they may tell you they have to run a diagnostic check to make sure the system is set to operate manually which can cost roughly £85-90 that's before they charge you labour ?

I am struggling to understand why anyone would want to shell out their hard earned cash to de-activate a feature whilst not a safety issue, is designed to prevent accidental damage to an item that would cost quite a few quid to replace.

Personally, I manually fold in the mirrors virtually every day, purely because some of the lanes around here are that narrow and my O/S wing mirror has been hit twice, so it easily becomes a habit on some narrow lanes but not on normal roads. Also for me, when parked, just a glance walking away and seeing the mirrors folded, confirms that I have locked it and not forgot to.

You could argue its not a safety issue but personally I would prefer to see what's coming up the side of the car with all the nutters on the roads these days as per your post regarding driving along narrow lanes that is the best way to close them inwards I use one nearby to access a dual carriageway luckily it has passing points otherwise I could easily have lost 2 on the drivers side & yes your spot on regarding locking the car I always listen for the mirror motors for peace of mind

Hi, if you open the mirror up you can unplug the connector than powers the motor. I thought mine We’re broken as they didn’t fold, when I opened them up I found that the previous owner had disconnected them. It’s a pretty easy job to do

Yes very strange one this I reckon even the MD Techs would scratch their heads trying to fathom the reason why? Your logic is the obvious solution

Is it possible to manually open the mirrors after the car has been locked?
Next week the temperature will go under zero. I must let the car all night outside and use it at 5 AM. I'm afraid that when I unlock the car in the morning the mirrors will broken when they try to open automatically. So the idea was to keep them open during the night.

I think your over thinking things pal. Get some de-icer on them if this is your concern.

Append already a couple of times to me, with previous cars, that in the evening was raining/snowing, in the night was going under zero and in the morning I could not open the doors anymore. And I think I'm more strong that a little motor and some frozen plastic . The layer of ice on the windscreen was soo thick that was not possible to scrape it. The windscreen wipers were glued and not moving anymore.
Maybe I'm going to cover the mirrors with 2 plastic bags !
