Fluctuating temp gauge - just had coolant leak repair

Hi,

My 2010 RCZ 1.6 200 (43k miles) has a temp gauge overheating problem...

In March, it developed a severe coolant leak that I took to a Citroen & Peugeot specialist down the road from me which they diagnosed a cracked water pump and replaced. Few days later, still leaking, so took it back and they diagnosed the drivetrain rubbing on a mesh water pipe... Lockdown then happened, they shut down without notifying me and I had their Citroen C1 courtesy car for two months before they reopened while my car was stuck inside their garage. They changed the water pipe, showed me the old one which was torn, and I've had my car for two and a half weeks now without issues.

However today the temp gauge started wildly fluctuating again. It was fine at 90 and then jumped up to the limit, red engine temperature warning popping up but then jumped back down to correct temp. It fluctuates up and down from normal temp to slightly above and once more hit the limit before jumping back down.

There does not seem to be any coolant leak anymore as there is no coolant puddle underneath the car this time and it has been fine for the past couple of weeks. I am at a total loss, and am unsure whether to trust sending it back to the same place and am considering bringing it to the main Peugeot dealer near me...

Any ideas from anyone what this possibly sounds like would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks.

EDIT: Ok so I see there's a temp sensor thread stickied, and the spike and subsequent settling detailed there matches my problem. However mine also seems to hover slightly above 90 normal temp and rise midway and fluctuate in between high temps and normal, is that possibly indicative of a different issue?

It could be something as simple as an air lock, but I would have thought the temp sensor was favourite.

Temp sensor was a recall so check with the dealer/ specialist & see if yours was listed & repaired I know mine is in the Peugeot data base as recalled for the same issue & this was a generic fault across the RCZ range

The temp sensor is the probable cause but There could be air in the system or the expansion tank cap may be failing which I know a few owners have encountered.
There is a bleed screw to release any trapped air it’s a plastic cross headed screw up near the thermostat housing. Unscrew slightly if coolant comes out retighten. And for what a cap costs it’s worth trying that if all else fails.

Expansion tank cap was replaced when coolant leak was fixed as was cracking. I've been trying to find the bleed screw, I saw a picture in the other thread but I feel so dumb I still can't find it...

For what it's worth also, had to drive it to work on Sunday and it didn't spike like the previous day, but rather ten-fifteen minutes into the drive started to steadily fluctuate and rise and fall between normal temp and running hot...

To help you find the bleed screw - if you look at this photo from an Ebay listing the cross head bleed screw is just above the blue gasket. Cheers. Bruce.

I've seen multiple photos of it and where to find it and followed guides about how to locate it but just can't seem to see it through the mass of things presumably above it, much less then get to it, without dismantling anything first. 🙈

There is of course always the possibility that the new sensor is faulty. It has been known before.
