First and second gear

Hey all!

First and second gear are a little bit tricky to get into, crunchy if you will. Seems to get a little better when warm. I think its disengaging fine. Wondering if the rcz is like that naturally? Or should I look at an oil change?

its just the gearbox oil warming up. after 10 or 15 mins the oil will be up to temperature and the gear changes will be a lot smoother.

Have to say mine is smooth in all gears, whether from cold or warmed up. If you're still under warranty drop it in to your dealer to be checked out.

I was surprised to read this post.
All my gears are fine hot or cold.
I'm not sure if the Hdi has a different box through.

Hi I have the same trouble Another member on here "Biaggi" changed his transmission fluid for 75W-80-GL4 and said it made a great difference to the gear change. As yet I haven't got round to changing mine yet but I'm going to give it a shot.

If it's HDi, then you'll probably find that this is a common issue.
Certainly was on mine.
You just have to take it a little longer / slower changing gear when cold.

Once warmed up, all back to normal.

I had the same on my own. In the end, I became frustrated with the lack of interest shown by my dealership and actually had an independent garage replace the transmission fluid entirely. They informed me that the original fluid levels were actually very low from the offset. Something that my dealer didn't seem to notice!

Hi guys,

Bought some redline. How much do I actually need? The bottle that came was 1ltr.

Mine is a little bit crunchy 1st-2nd too when cold, will also be getting fluid level checked out before it goes out of warranty!!

I think that, in all likelihood, this is the result of something that I have been reading more and more about. Apparently it is becoming common practice for car manufacturers to put in minimum levels of gearbox fluid when delivering. I think that it would be well worth getting these levels checked and change the fluid for a more premium quality fluid.

I'd like to see if a firmer lower engine mount will help. I know in other cars that it's helped with gear selection due to decreased engine movement.

Hi, Yes I find the same thing, but it's very subtle compounded by the fact i'm used to a tip top box (mazda mx5). It is better when warm when I would describe it as a good gear change 1nd to 2rd, When cold I would say I've been in worse cars but there is a slight resistance as it engages.

Never had an issue with my 12 plate 200bhp very smooth throughout the box. Looking forward to see how the new Carbon feels and drives tomorrow 23.5 hours and counting. Not that I am exited!!! :D

My first to second on my THP200 makes a grind/crunch noise and feels hard to engage even if it is hot or cold. The only way to get it not to make that noise is to go 1 - N - 2. So if I go slow it is all good.

Also there are times when I can not engage 1st or reverse the first time I try. Unless I use ALOT of force (which I don't do) it just wont go in and I have to go back to Natural and start again.

As I am soon to run out of warranty I will have to get it checked then when I am out of warranty I will try some different gearbox oil.

The first / second gear crunch when cold on the RCZ is a joy compared to Audi.
My car has the worst first / second gear crunch that I've ever experienced on a new car.

I physically grimace every time I have to change gear when it's cold.
When it warms up it gets better / disappears then.

Hope it gets better over time - although six months in it's still the same.

The issue with reverse is likely due to lack of synchromesh on that gear, you'll find it easier if you select first gear briefly, then reverse, I do this on all my cars. I find 1st won't engage sometimes if I've been travelling forwards then stopped and tried to engage 1st straightaway, it feels like almost hydraulic resistance which may be because stuff is turning so fast still, as you say a pause via neutral then re-selection seems to sort it. Crunching hot OR cold sounds a bit unusual though...
