Engine fault - repair needed

Owned my RCZ for less than a month, and it's been a month of unbridled joy and happiness from a car I instantly fell in love with.

Sadly, just went to drive home to Edinburgh and 5 mins into the journey my dash beeped and I got an "engine fault - repair needed" warning.

Car lost 80% of its power and I juddered back to my parents' house (now waiting for the RAC to come out and have a look).

Fan comes on loud as hell when I start the car, then continues to run for around 4 minutes after I turn it off again.

Only saving grace is that the engine warning is amber, as opposed to red (silver linings I guess).

Gutted doesn't even begin to describe how I'm feeling. Hopefully this can be sorted quickly and without silly expense.

I had the same with the Mrs car last week. Code said misfire nu.ber 4, cleared it and it ran fine until yesterday but this time says low fuel pressure so I'm thinking HPFP is on the way out.

Only 25k on the clock, so that would make me sad. Had read that a fuel pump issue would cause it to have a really rough idle, but mine isn't doing that fortunately, so fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed yeah. I'll fill everyone in on what happens either way, just in case anyone else has the same issue down the line...

RAC guy has just been out. Started the car and within about a minute he said it was a fuel injector fault which he could tell from the sound.

Bit gutted, but it's not quite the doomsday scenario of my worst fears either. Roughly a £500 fix apparently, but can also be fixed with a few hours' work.

I'll try to get it into the garage tomorrow.

If the car is in limp mode (lost 80% of power) you cannot be sure it's a fuel injector because the car is not running as it should - so the sound is not as it should be.

Did he clear the codes? If he didn't and just started the car - the error was stored in the ECU and the car would start in limp mode (even if he did clear the codes and the coil is dead, it would immediately jump back in limp mode and the car would sound like its a 1980s diesel).

I would advise you, to buy a cheap OBD2 reader (especially if you have a THP engine).

Fuel injector failure on THP engines usually starts with jolts and juddering during acceleration and not outright failure. If you haven't experienced that during your short period of time with the car, it's most likely something else.

My bet would be one of the coils failed or some sensor is giving wonky readings to the ECU and it's protecting the engine (happened to me twice in a year owning the car).

Thanks for the advice, I'll look into this then. Guy didn't have any of his diagnostic stuff with him, so checks were just him manually starting the car and going by sounds and having a look under the hood.

I love cars, but I know bugger all about how they work or how to fix them, so just took him at his word.

You can try unplugging the battery for 15minutes the replugging it and starting the car.

Only sure way to see and clear codes is with an OBD2 reader. Even the most basic one will give you an option to check the codes and delete them.

I personally use iCar Pro (Amazon) with CarScanner on my iPhone. My THP gives out intermittent faults (very delicate engine) that I can check and clear and then see if they come back. You can also monitor the car as its driving (RPM, Coolant temp, Oil temp, a lot of other sensors aswell).

Post the code/codes up if your getting P0087 (HPF PUMP) & a failing injector is rare on a car with that mileage as JC1 pointed out it sounds like you have low fuel rail pressure?

I'm down in stockbridge, but this has happened while I'm through in Fife at my parents.

There's a Peugeot specialist in Kirkcaldy, so I'll see if they have the kit to run a proper diagnostic check.

So this one may drag on a wee bit sadly. Specialist in Kirkcaldy are closing this afternoon for two weeks, so I've booked into an a electronic specialist in Glenrothes, fife that my parents recommended - he says he knows the engine well, which is reassuring (kind of).

They're mad busy though, so not getting seen until 4th May, so just gonna' live without a car for a couple of weeks.

Enough time to order myself one of those wee scanners to try to find out the error code myself. Certainly worth the wait if it means it turns out to be something cheaper than replacing/repairing the fuel injector.

That's a pity, I'm in Edinburgh today and code reader is in the boot. I hope you get fixed soon, I'm trying to find a rear wheel bearing, like hens teeth at the moment

Might not help but sounds very similar to what happened to my mrs car
It was the plugs ?! I also understand not many miles but worth a try

Cheers Ggen - I've got a wee diagnostic gismo I can plug into the car arriving on Monday, so that should get me the error code at least.

Hopefully that at least means the specialist dude can get it sorted on the day on the 4th, as I'm already missing driving the car like crazy :(
