Engine Fault - Repair needed - may become familiar!

I had this message today during the morning commute. Lost power, into limp mode.

Fortunately I was close to my destination. Car at 8,000 klms.

Parked the car and called peugout assist.

They advised (if warning light is amber not red) to zap the locks three times, which resets the fault log or some such, then take short drive to see if it clears. (May take a couple of attempts. - my words).

(do not do this if the indicator is red, you may need a tow to a dealer).

So now the fault indicator has cleared and power is restored.

Seems ok now, made me nervous earlier.

Took car in today to have test done, gave me a 208 1.4 Diesel courtesy car. By 4:30 still had no word back so I had to phone them to find out what was happening. Had to order a part for the cooling system that will hopefully be with them tomorrow. So hopefully I'll be able pick up Z tomorrow afternoon.

Got car back today and all ok on journey back home. Not sure what they actually changed as there was no paperwork available. They are going to send it to me on Monday.

Looks like the car has had it. It's already being in garage more times than I can remember for timing chain tensioner twice/seat motor replacement twice/spoiler not working/cylinder head cleaning twice/ now it's in the garage in bits again and the valves are all Coated. Needs a new cylinder head valve replacement the whole lot. Never mind it needs a service/taxing again this month and just spent up on 4 new continental R19 tyres :-( sick of it at the moment.

Sorry to say this Grant. That history would scare the crap out of me. No way would I be wanting to own that car outside of it's warranty period. Too many serious engine related issues for my liking :thumbdown:

Like i said previously, if you are running inferior quality fuel and the engine breaks you cant really be angry at the manufacturer. Poot quality fuel will result in unwanted timing pull and knock which will result in all the damage described in this thread bar maybe timing chain tensioner and seat motors. Is premium fuel that much more expensive in the UK?

That is not an easy question to answer as it is not easy to express the value between our UK £ and your Rand. All fuel sold in the UK is of a good quality. Supermarkets are the cheapest retailer and typically charge £1.40 for diesel with branded suppliers £1.45 and premium branded £1.55 per Litre.

Also remember, poor combustion will lead to rubish building up inside the engine and exhaust ports. Try this, when a car is behind you at night with its lights on, accelerate hard and check if you can see smoke coming from your exhaust. Our motors do tend to give a puff of smoke on initial hard take off but if you smoke is constant, your engine is not happy with what you are feeding it.

Spoke to a guy from Citroen on Saturday about a DS3 racing they have, engine need replacing and they say its because the guy drove crap fuel. THP motors need highest available octane at all times.

However buying so called better quality fuel does also result in this same problem. My OH had a problem with one of his old cars. He always buys Shell or the like but he had this problem and it was put down to dirty fuel. So it can happen with any fuel. As I said earlier, I always use Asda fuel. My mpg is very good and I've never had any problems. Letting your car get too low in fuel can result in these sort of problems with the sediment causing problems.

Thats really a small saving if my math is correct. Best is to just stick to Premium. Do you guys have Engen (Petronas??) Primax available?

Absolutely, like i said previously, we also had an issue with Shell here in SA with a bad batch of fuel. 1 bad batch every 10th tank is way way better than constantly putting gunk in your tank.

The saving of 10p per litre I would say is not a small saving. I do £500 a month on a train, so a 10p saving on my fuel is a no brainer and money in my pocket :thumbup:
