Engine Fault - Repair needed - may become familiar!

This is going to sound familiar, there are a number of similar posts already.
Perhaps the moderators should work on a sticky, I think this might sadly become all too common.

200GT THP. 14months, 16,000 miles.

July - Engine Fault, repair needed, but no accompanying change in engine behaviour. Warning message self-extinguished before making it to far flung dealer. 2 days in diagnostics, nothing untoward discovered.

August - Engine fault - repair needed. Like driving a milk float. Struggled to do 30mph, let alone 50 in 'get me home mode'. Made it to local dealer.
Same day response - 'it's like one we had 1 month ago'.
Following day - 'needs new cylinder head'. Apparently Pug ask mechanics to look for certain markings, if they have them, then replacement is needed.
Ordered from Peugeot, delivery estimated in 7 working days. Actually only received in 9 days, today, and being fitted along with other gubbins, minimum 2 day job, many apologies but not ready until after bank holiday (Fair enough by me).

I've researched the net and I'm not alone by any means. The 200THP pug engine has had (at least) one design flaw remedied compared to DS3 owners, but may still have another (timing chain pinion may slip and hence the engine loses its valve [and ignition?] timing). Whatever my specific issues, I'll post the full post-mortem when I get the wreckage back next week.

I've racked up a fair few miles in a brand new 208 in it's absence. It drives a bit like my dying rcz but 70mpg can't be sniffed at. Nice motability stickers!!!!! You have to laugh. Eric Idle, Olympics........

My dealer appears to know what they are doing, compared to some of the horror stories out there. It worries me that Pug (and others using the THP engine) seem to be dealing with serious THP flaws on an ad-hoc basis.
My early production mini saw loads of dealer-time compared to this, thus far, but I shall be asking some serious questions next week.

More to come.

Sorry to hear such unlucky news with the 200 petrol engine. Makes me feel a little better I went with the HDi. No engine problems to date after 31,000 miles. I've sometimes wished I went for the 200, but with my high miles and reading issues like yours, I think I made a good decision.

Are you the owner with the one off blue/silver painted wheels ?

I remember when I had my 207, most of the 207 GTi owners had awful bother with their engines and timing chain issues. Now you'd think Pug would have sorted out the problems by now considering it's the same engine.........

Hi,

Mine went in last week with practically the exact same problem (THP 200, 2 years old, 18500 miles). Engine management light came on and message repair required, but no noticeable difference in driving the car. Thought it would be a sensor problem and took it in to the dealer next day.

Apparently the problem was worn gears on the variable valve timing unit. Dealer spoke to Peugeot and they have told the dealer to fit a whole new cylinder head.

Non too pleased that I have had this problem, but happy that both Peugeot and my dealer appear to be doing all the right things to rectify it.

My concern is that no one has yet told me why the problem occured (faulty batch or design fault?) or in what way the new cyclinder head is different to ensure that it does not happen again.

Mine is still at the dealers waiting for parts/being repaired, but I hope the technician who does the work will be able to enlighten me when I pick it up.

Has anyone found out what causes this problem and what has been done to rectify it?

Amen to that

When the repairs are done, will it be extremely unlucky to have the same problem again or could it come round in a similar sort of timescale and / or mileage ??

If it's just the once and you've been unlucky, then nothing to worry about.
If it's possible that it could occur again with time / mileage, then get that extended warranty sorted soonest.

Yesterday have been informed that my RCZ have this problema. Last saturday, after 15 miles rolling i parked and shut off the engine. 20 minutes later came back to car and when i started up the engine, this mensage came on "Engine fault - Repair needed". However the car works just fine, and like the two past times that this warning came on, i keep the car working and came home to park it.

Monday took it to the dealer and in the afternoon they tell me this. Exactly the same that the user ArthurHucksake tell.

My car have 14599km, about 9000 miles

Lets wait for (good) news.

Gah! it's just happened to my 200THP. Driving very conservatively at the time (icy road), if anything I may have laboured the engine more than I normally would because was going up hill and was distracted by trying to fully clear the windscreen (yes I should have done that before setting off), anyway I should have dropped a gear and I didn't. Next time I tried to accelerate there was very little power available, then I noticed the tiny dash warning lamp was on. It was only when I got home that 'Engine fault repair needed' flashed up, and this was after I limped home and switched of the car and then restarted it. Damn, reading this thread it looks like a trip to the dealer, I really need the car at the moment! :x

I have a THP200 11 plate 9000 miles.

My engine management light came on yesterday together with the 'Engine fault - repair needed' whilst driving conservatiley at 30MPH. Car seems to be driving ok albeit there is a slight loss of power. I drive on the motorway as part of my commute and was able to drive at normal motorway speeds.

Trip to the dealer for me then. Deep joy..

On a slightly seperate note, my temperature gauge has a mind of its own, especially in adverse weather. Seconds after I start the engine and move off, my gauge goes off the scale and the STOP sign lights up together with the engine fan. After 2 seconds the gauge returns to normal and the sign switches itself off. I've disregarded it as a faulty temperature gauge and left it at that.

I'll keep you posted..

It's a forum. You pick your topic and comment on it. You chose to look at engine faults? For the record I love my RCZ. I just haven't felt the need to post until now.

Jassy, all people are entitled to post on the forum, whether they are regular posters or not. It would be nice to have more regular posters however that's not always the case. We should encourage other members to participate here as and when they require ie when a fault arises or otherwise. This is a resource to be enjoyed by all :)

For many people, they only join a forum because they have an existing car fault that they're trying to research or diagnose themselves before bothering a dealership. I have done this many times on previous cars.

Don't moan about it Jassy .... you're the first one to criticise when the rest of us get all 'lovey dovey' about the car, you can't have it both ways!!

I'm not surprised that Mr Rizz has not had an input on this thread. He usually goes noticeably quiet during one of Jassy more obnoxious comments.

Hey

My 308cc went in on Tuesday with the exact same symptoms, they said so far it looks like a misfire but more investigation needed. Hope I'm not waiting over a week for parts, they haven't given me a courtesy car yet! I also have the THP200 on just over 12,000 miles.

They couldn't find a thing wrong with it and couldn't offer an explanation as to why the warning came on. The warning actually disappeared the day I took it into the dealers.

Let me tell you why. Fuel quality. Straight forward and easy like that. You got a tank or two of bad fuel and THP does not like it. Recovers again when she gets proper fuel again.

Seen it hundreds of times here in South Africa where poor fuel is a problem. Sometimes they put wrong ron in wrong tanks and you end up on 91 instead of 93. They cant prove you did something wrong and to avoid that fight they just take the car clear the codes and say nothing is wrong.

If you can recall the fuel you used, try avoiding that station, always top up with highest available ron and she should treat you very well.

I got this message this morning  Took car straight to dealers who have run the test and come back saying it is the cooling system. Apparently the fan is going full tilt at all times. They have told me more test are required to find exact cause and is OK to drive until going in on Friday to get it sorted. First fault/problem I have had so lets hope it's quickly sorted.
