DRL for the rear

Just wondering if it is possible to get LED DRLs for the rear?

As front DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) are there to make a vehicle be seen more clearly as it's coming towards you, why are vehicles not provided with rear DRLs to make the vehicle more clear to people coming up behind?

On the RCZ I think that rear DRLs would look great if fitted on the bottom corner of the bumper (ie from left rear wheel up to the exhaust trim - same on RHS).

If I were to gets these what would I need?
Are there any pre made, would I get flexible LEDs?
How would I wire them in, would I run the wires to the front and piggy back it off the front DRLs, would I need a circuit board to reduce light levels when tail lights come on (same as when headlights come on, front DRLs drop intensity)?

I suppose another question would these be legal?

I know what you mean Chris, and turning the lights on dims the front LEDs so they are not as effective.

Flexible strip red LEDs would do the trick, and if you were to wire them into the front LEDs the power drop would already be there I assume, when the lights are turned on.

The thing would be making them attractive enough so they didn't look too "chavvy". Ready made red LEDs would be a better solution, but then getting some that fit into the space required would be the difficult part.

Btw, I know from past experience, cheap LED strips are notoriously unreliable, so if you do intend to go through with this, it's probabably worth paying a bit more, so you only do this once.

I too had given this idea an airing when I first got the Z, but after some thought, decided it probably wouldn't look as good on the car as it did in my head, so gave up on the :eusa-think: idea. But if you managed to get it to work & look good, with pictures and explanations on this thread, I could see quite a few others following suit.

Exactly what these guys said. You merely need to turn your lights on and upgrading the rear brake light to LED bulbs makes a huge difference.

If I'm honest, I don't personally think that rear LED (DRLs) are necessary because I'd hope to god that anyone behind me would be aware that there's a car in front of them, particularly with a rear booty as noticeable as the RCZ's . The only conceivable time I can see this being an issue would be in bright low lying sun and lights aren't going to do you any good at all in those conditions.

Ok...I get what you're meaning now. Can I ask where you'd intend such a thing to sit? I'm sure that there will be something similar out there but wouldn't like to try and wire it up. (However, i am a bit of an oaf with such things!! )

How about having the rear fog light activate when the front DRL's activate, they would also dim when the main lights come on, could have an auto electrician do the job ?

Not keen on having rear fogs on even at reduced power. Would prefer to have mods that can be removed relatively easily.

Am i understanding this correctly or is this a British thing?
The way i read this topic was that, when in DRL mode (Auto) There are no rear lights on at all on the car?

On mine the rear lights are on at all times regardless if i have just the parking lights on or the low beams.

I have the Mk2 and when in auto mode, DRL LED's are on at the front, but to my knowledge, no rear lights. They obviously come on with side lights or dipped/main beam headlights.

Maybe it's a different legislation thing in certain countries where the rear lights have to be wired to come on when just the DRL's are on?

This might just be something as simple as changing a setting somewhere, but I suspect it might be more of a wiring issue. Export models may have a different wiring loom of some sort? :eusa-think:

I too do believe that it's some sort of legislation thing. But then again it isn't cause while this is the case with my car, brand new Mercedes'es and BMW's don't have rear lights on when driving i think. I know i've seen some that doesn't have any rear lights. Unless there was a law change between 2011 and 2014...
