Pardon the necropost but this looked like the most recent thread on this issue.
The bottom of my plastic dipstick snapped off and I assume is now at the bottom of the sump, it's certainly not stuck in the tube.
Google tells me that this is not an unusual problem with the diesel engine and that it's ok to leave the couple of inch long piece at the bottom of the engine until the next oil change.
It also tells me that there are aftermarket steel dipsticks made for this very reason but I don't seem to be able to locate one of these. Can anyone point me at a supplier? I'm in New Zealand but beggars can't be choosers, anywhere in the world will do.
