Diesel Clutch Change

Hi All,

New to the forum.

I have recently attempted to change the clutch on my 2.0 HDi RCZ, however i ran into some issues when splitting the gear box and engine inside the engine bay.

Put simply there is no room to split them. The end of the gearbox is sandwiched between the LH shotgun and the subframe.

Its pretty clear that theyve shoe horned the engine in.

Has anyone done this before and can offer some advice?

Current thinking is subframe or front end needs to come off.

Remove the subframe is the only option on these cars

The thrust bearing is getting very noisy in the RCZ here. So we can't just removed the gearbox ? Must I remove the engine and gearbox as a unit to separate them?

what is involved in dropping a subframe? I don't have access to a two post hoist/lift to drop a subframe down and out.

Basically its the front bumper off & disconnect rad pack & crash bar leave the wiring on as you disconnect from the ECU then split the ball joints remove the driveshafts coolant pipes exhaust then hook it up to a engine crane undo the mounts then walk it out of the car no need for a four post lift me & the guy who owns the body shop nearby stripped one out in no time to get parts

Coming from the world of Italian cars and the issues with subframes at times with those. How do the RCZ subs fare as far as rust goes? I assume they aren’t bad as you never really hear them mentioned but just thought I’d ask. I bought a used front one just in case anyway. But maybe I didn’t need to 🙄

Starting in the mid-1980s, Peugeots began to be highly protected against corrosion.

I owned a 1988 205 GTI for 20 years and never saw a trace of rust. Although I live in a less humid place than the UK

The complete opposite of the Alfa Romeo 33 of that era.

We don't get the winters like in the old days & most foreign imports were rusting due to sea air as they came off the ships with lack of corrosion resistance undersealing plus we have less salted roads which means a big difference & cars appear to have better paint protection with Nickle zinc coated panels plus plastic floor pan covers

I'm in Australia, modern cars don't rust here. Any sort of rust on a car is pretty much unheard of (the interiors disintegrate in the sun instead).

I assured my wife the car would be fine for weeks/months until I get around to throwing a clutch into it .... 2 days later, its completely died, no doubt the flywheel has flogged out and destroyed the thrust bearing and pressure plate. She is most impressed with me 🤐

someone has sent me the details on changing the clutch, yes, it says subframe to get to the gearbox :)

A job I have done and you need to drop the subframe to do it . While the box is off , I would recommend you do the flywheel as well as that what failed on mine . Hdi on 108k and went

my wife also has a 407 .... its flywheel starting rattling at about 60,000km (kms,not miles). I put a solid flywheel conversion into that car. The RCZ is her daily driver, so I'm putting a DMF back into it as there was one available with overnight postage. I'll try and install it next week. A solid flywheel conversion is hugely expensive to import from the UK these days (infact car parts that used to be cheap from the UK, now seem very expensive over there).

Yeah I knew pug were at the galvanising long before most did. I am probably still just suffering from Italian car syndrome where you tend to horde things you might find useful down the line. Or when someone announces they are breaking a car you’ll end up with a random bonnet or wing just in case 😁

I had two windscreens from a Beta coupe for over 30 years. Just in case 🫣

It would be a hell of a job without a hoist/ramp. How would you get the car high enough to clear the gearbox out ? I'll document it here as I bumble my way through.
