Dashboard switched off while driving

Hi guys,

Sorry, I'm not new to this forum but I'm not much of a poster so apologies if this topic has been discussed before.

I started up my 61 plate RCZ on a cold morning about a week ago, I normally let it run for two minutes before setting off as I only have a short commute. I set off and got about half a mile down the road when all the lights on the dash and centre console just switched off. Radio, indicators, pretty much everything seemed to go but the engine continued to run and I drove about 100 metres wondering what the hell was going on.

Pulled over, switched the car off and restarted her. Started no problem and all things working again. Haven't seen the problem since. Car is well looked after with on 22k on the clock so seems strange.

Has anyone seen this before or does anyone have any indication as to what it could be? I think I still have a bit left on the dealer warranty so may take it in. Just curious that's all.

Cheers,
Matt.

electrical gremlins!! Very strange. get the dealer to run a scan on it and check everything before your warranty expires?
is it a petrol or diesel?

Yeah seems that it could be, I've had it about 8 months and no issues until now. Just makes you worry a little!

Its a diesel.

Water getting into the boot lid switch has been known to cause some bizarre electrical gremlins in several areas of the car. There are postings on the forum from several members which might help you and your dealer pin down the cause.

I had my boot open of its own accord while driving on one occasion, this was after a vigorous hosing down/Sunday wash. I had plenty of warranty left so I wasn't inclined to raise it with my dealer and nothing untoward has happened since.

If you had plenty of warranty left I would have suggested waiting for a repeat occurrence but in your case I would definitely pursue it straight away to be safe.

Thanks Steve.

I'll research the forums regarding the boot lid switch to see if I can get a resolution.

Contacted my dealer today and it seems the dealer warranty doesn't cover anything electrical. Typical! Oh how I hate small print.

I'll see what I can do, if you do see or hear anything of this nature on the forums would you kindly direct me? I love my Z and really don't want this to get in the way of that! Lol

Thanks again,
Matt.

Thanks Steve.

I think I may have found the problem, there's no guarantee but it seems like a bit of a coincidence.

Driving to work this morning in the rain I noticed water coming into the car from the drivers side window and dripping down onto the dash/door card near the heater outlet to the right of the steering wheel. Quite a significant amount was coming in and this was running down the door and in the join between the dash and the door card (when the door is closed).

Stuck a cloth there just to absorb anything before I could get to work. After getting to work, on closer inspection it appears the small plastic piece at the front end of the drivers side window (just before the wing mirror) has broken loose. There was a visible gap where the water could get in.

Managed to pop the plastic back in but it may need replacing. I hope that maybe this is all that caused it and its not more serious. No more issues since it happened over a week ago.

What do you think? Possible?

Cheers,
Matt.

Any chance of posting a picture as this might help someone else who may have a similar problem?

Good idea - I'll take a photo on the weekend and will post as soon as I get a chance.

If I can help even one person out then it'll be worth it.

Cheers guys,
Matt.
