Coolant warning!

Advice please! the warning light keeps coming on asking me to top up coolant, when i check it in any circumstance (hot, cold, engine running etc) the coolant is at the full level of the bottle!

any idea's , is it thermostat sticking closed or open , faulty sensor, is this a common error ?

Temperature Sensor is most likely faulty. Very common problem. I had the same on mine and so did a bunch of other people on this forum

thanks for your response, is there a quick fix ? what will happen if I just disconnect the sensor? is it something I need to take to peugeot to get done ?

I don't know. I would take it to Peugeot. Takes them about an hour to fix.

Yep, this happened to me last summer. I just managed to get it fixed before the warranty ran out along with other issues I had.

i had the same fault I opened the lid gave it a wipe with a cloth and it never happened again

Take it to Peugeot if your car is experiencing issues with temperatures and yet the coolant level and car is running fine. If your temp gauge goes to maximum and the STOP light comes on and then the temp gauge goes back to normal, and this happens on and off, eventually it might trigger the EML, then the temp sensor is the problem (in most cases).

Yes this is a known issue, but recently after trying a few different things Peugeot has solved it by replacing the sensor (which includes the housing it comes in) and wiring harness. Previously they replaced just the sensor, then sensor and housing, but now the harness seems to have solved the problem. So it is a modified modified fix

All should be done under warranty as it is a known problem with Peugeot but they will not replace the sensor with the new modified modified unit unless you are experiencing the temperature issue and the problem is caused by the temp sensor in question.

thanks guys for all your advice. I disconnected the sensor and discovered moisture in the connector, gave it a wipe connected it back up and the problem has gone away. I will however get it sorted when it goes in for a service in march.

Mine is also giving the "top coolant level". I check the level and it looks litte low. (under minimum) What color coolant can I fill with? it looks like there is yellow-coloured coolant now.

I've used prestone it's yellow and cones in a yellow bottle £1 from tesco's.

Problem solved. Went to Peugeot-service and they changed the sensor on the coolant expansion tank. No beeping warnings anymore :thumbup:

There is a replacement thermostat housing which was replaced on mine it fixed it . also i lost coolant which turned out to be the Turbo cooling pump , not that even my main dealer knew it had one till they looked . all ok now

Hi, where IS the temperature sensor on my 1.6 GT 156?
I don't have the black square device on the side of the expansion tank (although molding is there) with wires that plug into it, but do have a 'sensor' that goes into the side of the expansion tank with a 'flying lead'. Maybe this is a fluid level indicator? If so, would be interested in both the location of the thermostat (housing), and the temperature sensor, just so I know where they are.
No problems, but have feeling that temp gauge should go up quickly then fall back when the thermostat opens, but seems to climb somewhat steadily over 3 - 6 miles of 8 mile journey to work in normal traffic. Different car...different characteristics, I guess. Fiat Coupe got hot really quick, then thermostat kicked in, but on that car the coolant was constantly flowing through the heater matrix. On a normal run, RCZ gauge seems to operate normally, and stuck in traffic jam last Monday for 1.5 hrs, gauge just sat at 90° and didn't move, so guess all ok. Bit OCD and on high alert at the moment as only had the car a week!!

Coolant level sensor is normally in the expansion tank on left side of engine looking from the front & are prone to failing over time & need replacing but only use a Bosch sensor as other OEM types are not compatible
Coolant temp sensor is usually located inside the expansion tank itself & as the connectors are at the rear of the tank housing on the 156 units they are longer tails after they upgraded the tanks design

Is there any way of telling if my car has received the temp sensor/thermostat housing/cable, 'modified modification'?
If not, I'll mention it next time I'm in for the pre-winter check-up.

The updated unit had longer connection wires (tails) & have been mainly fitted to the current models that have suffered coolant failures of varying degrees ie Leaks EML warnings of low or no coolant warnings water pump issues etc
