Hi,
The coolant light is coming on, on our 2011 RCZ. I haven't checked the level yet, however what coolant should I use and how much would I need.

Thanks

Hi mate, I use prestones antifreeze in my Z with no problems, but shortly after buying the car I had to have a new coolant sensor fitted because the old one went faulty. Hopefully it's just low coolant in yours.

To be honest, any coolant will do. It's just water with anti freeze in it. You'll see the measures on the tank in the engine bay. Just buy a large size because it doesn't go wrong. I just kept it in the boot of the car.

I thought it was a formulated mix to stop corrosion in the cooling system, most new if not all are now using a formulated pre - mixed, different colours for different cars.

Oh but it doesn't. You may or may not have noticed that there are three different colors of coolant. Red, green and yellow. And you do not mix these, ever. If you do it could turn the entire coolant liquid to jelly or something, and that doesn't really float around so good as you would imagine :D

I don't think it works like that in this application :D

However i've also heard you can mix two of these together with no bigger problems, but i can't remember which ones. I think the yellow one should be kept completely separate.

Just did an Internet search on this subject, and it seems it's a minefield out there. Some people saying it's ok to mix certain colours, others saying it will cause untold problems.

Green seems to be the colour that causes most trouble when mixing with other colours.

The best general advice seems to be, ask the car manufacturer, or check the manual, and just use whatever they suggest, making sure it's the same as the coolant already in the vehicle - someone may have already changed it.

If you mix any, and your not sure, drain the lot and start again. It's not like this is a weekly expense, so if you have to pay that bit more for the right stuff, so be it. The alternative might just prove to be a lot more expensive :eusa-think:
