Coolant Consumption normal ?

Hi, as a fairly new RCZ owner bought mine (2011 156hp ) just 3 monthsand 10000km ago.
Last Saturday after a 6800km vacation trough whole Europe I got the message check coolant when I started my engine.
When I did, the sensor was right and the coolant level in the reservoir was far below minimum.
As the car is in a 1 year warrenty from the dealer I called them and asked to have my car checked to make sure I am not loosing coolant.

Long story short, another Peugeot dealer (closer to my home) checked the car and filled the system with half a liter of coolant and gave me the story that this is normal behavior for the HPT 1.6 engine the RCZ has during driving the 10000km I did last months.

As far as I know, the cooling system is a closed system and coolant should not be consumed at all. None of my former cars needed me to top up coolant ever.

I would love to know what your experiences are in regard of "consumption" of coolant with your RCZ's just to make sure the Peugeot dealer is telling the truth.

Hi my 200 thp (2011 10,000miles) warning alarm is constantly reminding me (4/5 times a day every day) to top up my coolant level but every time I check the level is fine, I would appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

Thanks Gents !

@donwan, I've seen lots of issues with the coolant level sensor on this forum so seems you are coping with the same issue.

My issue was not sensor related, or better my coolant sensor did it's job, as my coolant level was below minimum.
Currently it's just abov max so I will keep a close eye on it to see what the actual consumption is.
Probably I will not notice it anymore as 6800km in 3 weeks is not something I plan to do more often :D

Coolant consumption is not normal, as the cooling system is closed. Some minute drops in level might be acceptable, but not if it's consistent and/or in large quantities.

Not had any issues with mine (yet) checked the levels regularly, not had any drop in coolant level since I bought it. :eusa-think:

In general you're right. But there are engines out there which like to have the occasional drink, or two. Meet the THP engine.
Mine consumed about 0.3 litres of coolant in total over 35.000 miles.

It's not a matter of different engines, it's simple: the coolant has nowhere to go under normal circumstances. If you need to add coolant, then it's going somewhere it's not supposed to. For example, blown head gasket, split hose, cracked expansion tank etc. If all you had to add were 300 ml, then it's highly likely that either the system wasn't filled fully and/or there was a small airlock that slowly went away.

no coolant drop on mine after 3,000 miles in 2 months since I bought her....mind you mines a diesel if that should make a difference. But a closed system is precisely that and shouldn't need toping up?

the coolant walks thru different "gates" in an Euro 6 engine which is the THP in its latest disguise. you never know where at those "gates" which are sensors, valves, etc. some of the coolant vaporizes. it should not, yes, I agree with you. but it does. be it a fault or not, it just does.
it doesn't have to be a blown gasket or a leaky reservoir. :greetings-wavingblue:
