Changed setting from km to miles but mileage now (obviously) lower but what happens with the paperwork at higher mileage?

Purchased petrol with 96000 miles and I have to say it’s in very good condition, saw a lot more with a lot less mileage but not as good condition, small display under speedo shows 96402

So after a day of driving around with km readings for the main central display screen (between rev and speedo counters) it was starting to get on my protruding bits that trying to work out how much fuel was left, trying to set speed limiter for constant speed changes in the A and B round here it needed to be changed to miles

So after a search I’ve changed the units through the radio menu but the odometer/milometer/distance meter whichever you want to call it in the small display changed to 59114

👍 I thought, but all the paperwork I got (MOT, service stamps, various bill receipts) all align with it being 96000?

I cannot think I am the first owner in ten years that has decided that km is good but not so good on this island

So what’s the deal, am I just reading it wrong and it doesn’t matter what you change in radio settings for km/mph celsius/fahrenheit etc the distance ran is the distance ran? If so is the new display of 59914 incorrect?

1.609 Km=1 mile so looks about right

So that means all the stamped service book, MOT’s and garage receipts have always been taken on face value of the digital reading which has always been in km and no one’s ever changed it? Does this happen?

Don’t get me wrong I’m happy I’ve paid a lot less for a car that hasn’t been looked at properly but I’m the third owner so I’m finding it hard to believe everyone before (and whoever else has driven it, garage etc) has not mentioned the readouts for fuel remaining, mpg, distance travelled are in km

My next service book stamp and MOT are now going to show much less mileage, do garages note on there previous readings taken in km?

A vehicles mileage is recorded on the MOT log so it should historically be correct but this is not always the case with some cars as it may have had ECU- BSI problems or even mileage readings wiped either criminally or electrically & mechanically for differing reasons & this can include insurance write offs which have been damaged- repaired & put back on the market as category coded vehicles of which guaranteed mileages are sometimes negligible?

Did you do a vehicle history check prior to purchase? Trade or Privately sourced?

Trade, Hpi checked everything

Lets face it, it’s the dealer who loses out here
All the stamps and garage receipts give you a timeline of its use and you can see when change of ownership happened new stamps and garage receipts (both near each other) are there

I just need to safeguard any future sale by having everything recorded in actual miles now, or just keep it in km and take a hit on a future sale with having a “higher mileage” car

Just can’t believe it’s never been picked up, there must be owners here who have changed units to now find there odometer reading much lower - unless they bought the car new

Just read some old posts....some owners seem to have had this as a PDI issue from new!

You have done well. The issue will be as you say changing over all the documentation and data with DVLA, MoTs, Service Records etc to secure a future sale.
