Car Paint

RCZ. Nowadays, car paints I am informed have to be water-based from a health basis.

Can such as Halfords spray can contents (cellulose) be used successfully on water-based paint ?

How can water-based paints be thinned down / what with ?

I take it that primer, undercoat and lacquer coverings are also water-based ?

Excuse my ignomy, but the paint spray can I have recently purchased from Halfords

(it's discharge smells of cellulose) when overlaid on the original on my car comes out as thick

(akin to that of a WaxOil spray). Halfords did replace the can's respray nozzle to no effect and the

overlay's were impossible to (2,000) wet-and-dry to blend in with the original.

I would be grateful for clarification of the noted issues.

'Mornin' Donna,

A minor scuff to door when taking it out of garage opening - no more than 3 " long
but did go down to bare metal.
To gain resolve I took the motor for professional re-spray yesterday & have just
been informed it's ready for collection. Cost £200 ! So, I'm away to collect it.
Hence my previous post is for any future regettable happenings.

Thank goodness you didn't attempt to do it yourself!! £200 is nothing for a decent repair!

The only way you can get a good colour match is to use the same type of paint.
Ive used halfords rattle cans before, but they take a lot more work in my opinion. I have done whole pannels with it and they looked great after flatting and polishing, but looked like new parts as the rest of the car was old and the paint wasnt looked after. I have also done a repair paint job on a scratch similar to yours on the front wing of a 106. From a distance it looked fine but up close you could see the difference in colour throughout the panel.

I would suggest using Paints4U.

Matched to your paint colour code and no spraying. More precise application for a better finish.

Thank y'all for the response on car painting. Donna, alas I spent 5 days on prime, basecoat & lacquer

for 4 unsuccessful self tries, the Halfords base coat seemingly was the bugbear. As I said before it

came out of two spray nozzles akin to how WaxOil does (porridge). Following which it would not flat and

in so doing it would not feather-in to the original paint. Which is why I raised the query on cellulose

over a water based substrate.

On a previous occasion I successfully filled-in, primed, base-coated and lacquered a complete door on a

TVR Cerbera I had and it could not be faulted by the garage I then used.

That particular TVR. at Pembrey some years ago I hit a corner that Tarquini said was good for 85 mph

& I hit it at around 95, drifted off in a perfect power slide and into the barriers that stopped the meeting -

for a long time. Resulting in an uninsured TVR being humped onto a low loader and carted off to Blackpool

which cost me in excess of 16 grand to rectify, inc. a new chassis and a complete rebuild.

I did hold an FIA Int. comps licence for some 10 years. Nowadays I enjoy myself by motoring down to

Lisbon each year, I have done that trip in a Tuscan, 2 Merivas, M400 Noble, GTO Noble, Exige S (fabulous

motor for handling) but was akin to being in a coffin when cramp occurred - & in a Caterham CSR260 and

on a 500 mile run (Santander to Lisbon) the CSR was murderous due to the heat built-up from the

Cossie engine. So come September I'll be enroute to Lisbon again in the RCZ - of course, fingers

crossed - and yet again without a spare.
