Buying a used RCZ with automatic gearbox?

Hi guys!

I'm looking into a used RCZ with around 30.000 miles, full option with 156HP version. BUT, I'm not keen on buying used cars with automatic gearbox. Will go on a test drive but I would like to hear from you guys, are there any general faults with these gearboxes? Anything I should know? Oil change? Yes, no, when? Who's gearbox is it, peugeot or from someone else? Are these gearboxes installed also in some other cars?

So thank you guys for any useful info. Normaly wouldn't ask so much but I just spend a fortune of money into fixing my german car and wouldn't be to happpy to get another "real estate" in my garage! Cheers.

The automatic gearbox is a Porsche system. Trying to find advice on them will be difficult as there are so few of them sold, especially in the UK.

Has anyone changed their oil on an automatic gearbox. If so where and how?

I changed the oil on my auto 156. The drain plug is easy to spot. It has a torx bolt in the centre which seals a pipe that determines that the oil is at the correct level. So you remove the whole plug to drain it then screw back in the larger outer part, top up the oil until oil comes out of the centre section, then replace the torx bolt. The filler plug is also easy to spot as it has a pink top to it. This is also a torx bolt. Someone can probably post a diagram showing its location but it is toward the front of the engine bay. I guess it is probably best to drain it when warm and check the level after running it and leaving to stand for a day.

I changed my oil a few times after going through floodwater and the gearbox playing up. My local garage said they never touch auto gearboxes - they pass all that work onto a specialist.

Cheers. Bruce.

Hi Bruce, Thanks for the reply! I found the pink torx nut and also ordered a 17mm hex for the drain. Car has 60k so I'm going to flush it 3 times. There is a really good Utube video of a guy doing an identical Volvo gearbox. One thing that he did say was that the car needed software to tell it that the gearbox oil has been changed. I wonder if this is for any particular reason and if it applies to an RCZ.

Auto gearbox, Oil change done. I did the triple flush method using Triple QX ATF, available from Europarts £40 for 5 LTRs and recommended for Aisin autoboxes. I used 10 LTRs. (3, 3 then 4 ltrs) The tricky part comes at the end. Flushes are done with engine not-running and you will get about 2.7 LTRs out but on the final 3rd flush put in 4 ltrs replace the filler nut AND the drain plug (TQ 35 NM, including the inner drain nut.) Then run the engine til the gearbox temp is 50 to 60 degrees. I used my OBDC reader to tell me but in both the Utube Volvo video and in my case it took 20mins to get to temperature. You then remove the inner drain plug WITH engine running and let the excess oil drain out until it starts dribbling. Then do everything up nice and tight and you're done. (I didn't change the 2 rubber seals on the drain plugs but would recommend it!!) IMG_20200714_140731_963.jpg
Car needs to be level but you will need to raise it a bit to get access to drain plug.
