Brake Disc Upgrade.

Car was in for its 20,000 mile service and 4th stamp in 3 years yesterday.

Plugs, Filters, Oil etc etc the whole hog.

On the advisories there was a note that both front and rear discs looked like they had started to pit and would likely be recommended for a change in about 6 months time.

On my MG's it was simple and relatively cost effective to chuck the OEM discs and upgrade with nice grooved discs and uprated pads which had the massive benefit of reducing brake dust.

Looking at prices for the RCZ kits available on the other hand I cannot really justify paying a fortune on what is my daily works car when the standard setup provides more than enough performance for me.

But as ever I'm always up for a good deal so people... prove me wrong.

Can I upgrade my brake setup to look better and produce less dust (while hopefully eliminating that awful squeak) without spending a bomb!

Ideas?

The cheapest way would be buy standard discs and get a metal working place to drill the holes etc. It may be difficult to find a place that do this as I would think the holes would need to be in perfect balance to prevent judder, a bit like the wheel.

I have the grooved and drilled black diamond discs and theu work so much better over the standard discs. For me it is beneficial as the 2010 diesels have the smaller brakes and I felt they werent quite effective enough.

Another way to prevent dust is a guard you put between the wheel and discs.

Firstly if it was a main dealer giving you that 'advisory' indication then I would take it with a pinch of salt on the basis that their job is primarily to sell you products whether you actually need them with the urgency they like to give ! I'm not anti Main Dealer its just that to them Business Is Business of course AND therefore selling you new discs and pads all round plus fitting is good business when you've just had a service and is part of their "see you in 6 months for a FREE coffee from the machine and a little daylight robbery" :lol: Capitalism is just that and so the Consumer needs to be aware of this :clap:

A for discs you can get good rears discs from the likes of 'Europarts' (Pagid etc) for very little cost, however as for the fronts aftermarket discs are very limited and hence may not be at a lower price band than Peugeot. Other Forum members have also walked the pathos searching for replacement Front discs at an everyday type price as you indicated was your desire.

I recall that "RCZ Performance" was in the process of possibly getting in some front discs which were I think premium 'Black Diamond' discs so check them out. Theses discs may or may not be more expensive that Peugeot originals BUT they are a far better product and will definitely last longer than those that it seems are fitted to Z's when new that appear to have a ridiculously short life compared to other manufacturers.

As for grooved grooves or holed discs they are their to assist in heat and dust dissipation under extreme conditions and
hence are fitted mainly for cosmetic reasons, the grooves/holes increase pad wear due to the extra edges to the contact patch of the disc.

Like I previously said I would get another opinion on your discs by an "independent mechanic" who's primary job is to
provide a good service so that customers come back as opposed to the many businesses who's primary job is to sell you another product whether or not you really need it based on their 'biased' subjective opinion !

Any questions about brakes we can definitely help out.

For anyone wanting to keep the same disc size and calipers, then we offer Black Diamond for front and rear. These are upgraded discs and pads (optional but highly recommended), and you get to choose from:

Plain
6 Groove
12 Groove
Cross-Drilled
Combination of Groove and Drilled

Remember you need to know your brake type (Standard or Sport). Not sure check this out:

Hi,
Concerning brake upgrades. If I was to change my discs to black diamond 6 groove, discs and pads, (because of the rust issue)
Would I have to inform my insurance company ?
Would they see this as a modification ? :eusa-think:

My much better half works in car insurance. She describes the business as being like gambling. An insurance company assesses the odds based on known factors and risks and comes up with their price so anything that changes the nature of the risk they took on could be seen as a notifiable modification. The trouble is, they don't all use the same criteria (understandable, there are millions of permutations) so the best advice is always, always to tell them. It will say something in your terms and conditions to the effect of "you must notify us of any changes from manufactures spec".

You don't want them examining your car after an incident, spotting the discs (and believe me, the engineers they use are very knowledgeable) and cancelling your policy/not paying out because you're in breach of the terms.

They won't always charge you but even when they do it's not always a lot. I had to pay £17 extra one year because my previous car came fitted (from the factory at that) with larger alloys than standard for that model even though I hadn't specified them, it was the ex-showroom model. But better a mere £17 than not having a policy pay out when you need it.

Thanks stevebasshead, that was a very detailed explanation. And very helpful.
Just after I posted this there was an article on radio 2. It was about insurance. What a coincidence ?
They said to even tell your insurance company if you had stuck stickers on your bumper ?
I now plan to ring insurance in the morning and enquire about a change in premium.
Will let you know what they said.

Haha, I remember getting a window sticker with my insurance policy documents once. I didn't put it in cos I didn't like giving them free advertising but if I had they might have charged me extra :D:D:D

Fingers crossed you won't get charged too much if at all.

Well just phoned my insurance company (Hastings) and they said that if they are not a different size and that they were made for my car then no additional cost and they would not have to be added as a modification. I just said that they were a different brand. Which is what they are. Also got a quote from my garage and it's cheaper than I thought for them to replace all 4 discs and pads.
He will also paint callipers. I just got to buy them now. Looking at next month.
Rcz performance will be getting a phone call very soon.
Thanks for the reply by the way (RCZ performance) been meaning to reply but was sorting this issue out.
Will post before and after pics when done.

When you take it in for the discs doing, make sure they use a four point lift, DONT LET THEM USE THE JACKING POINTS! :shock:

I think the brake discs are gonna have to be put on hold for now after this happened.......

High kerbs in a Cardiff car park caught me unawares.
Been quoted £190 for a Diamond cut refurb. Car off road for 7 days which is not an option.Thanks DKZ5745 for advise. Maybe this is what I needed to get myself a proper full size spare. Was toying with the idea of getting one now I think I will. £315 for a new alloy,budget tyre on kerbed wheel(as its only a spare). I've read that it will fit in boot space. Just need to get a wheel brace and jack. Any thoughts on which type of jack would be best ? Having seen the damage some do to the sills.

Trolley Jack with adaptor seems to be most popular. I have a low profile Trolley Jack from Halfords & bought a Hockey Puck from EBay & grooved it myself.

I know some have bought the official Peugeot Scissors Jack, so if there should be an issue, Pug can't point any fingers. :eusa-think:

Was the hockey puck groove you made like the one on the jacking aid that was made on the other post ?
Do you carry the spare with you ? And trolley jack ?
