When I was a teenager, I used to love biking off road round Rutland Water or Thetford forest etc. But I havent ridden a bike for nearly ten years. I have decided to take up the hobby again As im a 20 something stone 26 year old, and having a baby puts your life into perspective.
Due to the new addition to the family, I dont have much disposable income. So I thought id start out with something a little cheaper and modify it when I can as my confidence gets better.
So this is what I have:

A boss dominator 18" frame with 26" wheels, zoom front forks and shimano brakes and gears.

Im planning on getting wider tyres as these ones look like cheap ones you would get on a £50 bike. Any recommendations?

Im also planning on converting the wheels to quick release so its easier to load into the boot of the Z.

I have to wait until pay day so I can buy some lights and a helmet (I did mention I hadnt ridden for years ;) ) then I can take it on its maiden voyage.

What do you other cyclists have? What sort of routes/trails do you do?

There appears to be some kind of disruption within the continuum: I find myself agreeing with Wrapper :helpme:

Like you, I'm considering getting back into cycling as well. We've got a few lanes, bridle paths and disused railway lines not far from our house. My old road bike from the 80s is a bit decrepit, so I'm thinking of getting one of the Quick hybrid bikes.

ride loads off road - and on road from local bridleways to trail centres in wales. im no skinny jimmy. start off steady and slowly build up the miles. that is a heavy bike, it is worth getting a lighter hard tail when funds allow.
my stable includes 2 carbon MTB and a carbon road bike

yeah, ride on the roads you are allowed to as the highway code states. go to Mainland Europe and cyclists are welcomed with open arms but yet not here WTF

Well you have my two primary recommendations in the form of the comfiest seat that you can afford and padded shirts Abz but those come after a helmet etc. Those are absolute essentials regardless of the type of cycling you're doing or your level of experiences. I'd also buy some good quality cycling gloves. Trust me, you need them! Also, make sure you have a multi tool, spare inner tubes, pump etc etc. There is nothing worse than being caught short here!!

Further to this, when it comes to the bike itself. Tyres are absolutely the right starting place. I think that you'll find the following link helpful. It's American but it's bang on.

I used to ride off route nearly every weekend, 25-30 miles sometimes not seeing a soul.
I was told if your going to do any serious routes the frame is the most important, you can then hang any bits off it that best suit.
I went for Marin's their frames were the best with lifetime guarantee on the bearings at the suspension points. Last one I bought was over £1000.00 I then changed to Hope hyd disc brakes, titanium hubs and skewers Marzzochi forks, spd pedals I had the frame suspension spring changed to a progressive type, Mavic rims, Tioga Physcho tires. I used to go through chain rings, rear cassette's and chains as I didn't believe in paying top dollar for a component that would wear away like a less expensive one especially in the wet and gritty conditions on the moors etc. I spent a fortune, used the bike hard then stopped, hung it up in the garage where it is today not used in about 5 years and got interested in something else. In conclusion, don't get carried away unless it's serious and then look to the second hand market to get the best bargains. Mountain Bikes like road bikes loose more value than cars

Thanks for the tips :) I wont be venturing too far to begin with or plan any weekends away yet lol.
I got this bike from ebay for £95 which was a bargain as it was never used and costs £300 new. I did have my eye on a Carrera hardtail but it went out of budget :( Hopefully what I want to do to this one wont break the bank and may be transferable to a better bike if required :)
