So what was your best motoring bargain ever?
Mine was when I had to force a tenner into the fist of a salt-of-the-earth East Ender, when he was insisting I could have the motor for nothing.
The year was 1969 and the winter was coming, and my only wheels was the Clubmans racer which had no screen nor any weather protection whatsoever.
I was having a trailer built and was on the look out for a tow car.
On shifts, I would chat with the cleaners, and the generous chap was the owner of the cleaning company, who understanding my plight, insisted I take the Classic.
The "free" motor was a 1961 Ford Consul Classic 1340cc in green with perforated wings; but he threw in a couple of new wings he had bought but couldn't be bothered to fit.
Whilst it did not fit the bill as a tow car, it got me through the winter of 69/70. :D
I even got trade in part ex when I bought a Morris Minor Traveller in 1970 to pull the rig.

My best ever bargain, without a doubt, was when I bought a car that 9 months previously had been brand new & over £32k with all its extras, and I got it as a 9 month old very low mileage 1 owner (Peugot themselves) for just £18k.

I think my best bargain was buying a Peugeot 206 off a friend for £250, at the time it was worth £2,000. He got rid as the head gasket had gone. Fortunately, my brother owned the exact same car, but totalled it, so a few mates came round and swapped the engines over before the insurance company came to collect it

I did save a few £ on my 440i though.

List price: £54,500
Purchase Price: £41,300 ish

Yes I would have to say my Z but it was a bit of a fluke because I hadn’t done much research first. Saw the Ad on auto trader car looked fab so did the deal over the phone with an agreed px price for my old MG ZT and although the dealer was around 100 miles away it was worth every mile! The independent dealer didn’t realise what model he was selling and had price the Launch Edition at the same price as a GT £13K when and if you could find a Launch Edition they were selling for £18K with more mileage on the clock! He also gave me way over the book on the MG so win win

And let’s be honest how many cars turn heads like our Z’s do for the money!
