So what was your best motoring bargain ever?
Mine was when I had to force a tenner into the fist of a salt-of-the-earth East Ender, when he was insisting I could have the motor for nothing.
The year was 1969 and the winter was coming, and my only wheels was the Clubmans racer which had no screen nor any weather protection whatsoever.
I was having a trailer built and was on the look out for a tow car.
On shifts, I would chat with the cleaners, and the generous chap was the owner of the cleaning company, who understanding my plight, insisted I take the Classic.
The "free" motor was a 1961 Ford Consul Classic 1340cc in green with perforated wings; but he threw in a couple of new wings he had bought but couldn't be bothered to fit.
Whilst it did not fit the bill as a tow car, it got me through the winter of 69/70.
I even got trade in part ex when I bought a Morris Minor Traveller in 1970 to pull the rig.
