The new CEO of Peugeot-Citroen, ex-Renault man Carlos Tavares, announced back in April that the French company will cut its lineup of cars from 45 down to just 26 models across three different brands.

While a more streamlined lineup is certainly to our liking, cost-cutting measures could mean the end for several of our favorite French cars. Thankfully, there's plenty of room for Peugeot to cut in the MPV segment and the exciting RCZ coupe is safe.

According to a Peugeot brand CEO Maxime Picat with Dutch publication Autovisie, a second generation RCZ is in the pipeline. Originally launched in 2010, the car received a mid-life facelift last year, meaning a new model won't arrive until 2016 or later.

The major thing to get excited about is weight, or rather the lack of it, as the same EMP2 platform used by the 308 will be used here. Conservatively speaking, this could cut a significant chunk of about 100 kg (220 lbs).

So how has Peugeot's brand new coupe managed to design its way to success? It all has to do with the number of heads turned per euro spent. While the Audi TT or VW Scirocco are great, the RCZ looks even better than the Germans and does so for a bit less money. Highlights of its contemporary design include sparkly metallic roof rails, a perky rear end and double-bubble roof like a Zagato concept.

The hot version called RCZ R, which is powered by a highly tuned 1.6-liter turbo with 270 hp, is the first Peugeot in decades to win a comparison, showing it's faster than a 2-liter turbo Megane RS.

I hope that Pug take the chance to launch a truly new design for the RCZ and take the chance to move the model forward.The initial concept of the car was a great design,but the front nose cone was not,just an attempt to give the Pug brand some kind of identity.As these mk 1 models are now coming on to the market at £ 10,000 and below it is creating another market and Pug have to move the model forward.by introducing an R model and a partsbin type thing using a mix of different interiors to keep sales up while moving towards a replacement. And Audi have stood still with the TT design while pug forged ahead with the mk2,sorting out the front end and giving it a few more years in production.Audi will i am sure launch a proper new car soon(the TT i mean) So its up to Pug to get in there with a genuine stylish Rcz replacement,drop the Sport entry model and create a coupe worthy of a challenge to the best selling budget sports car namely the TT.Pug have to establish the RCZ brand as a stand alone product and get away from the repmobile 508 and the nondescript 308 which because of bad sales have turned to a new front which is again nondescript despite the changes im afraid.

Not everyone will agree re mk1 vs. mk2 design or 308/508 (I don't).
To be fair the mk1 was very close to the RCZ concept which was very well received, so you can't blame Peugeot for the mk1 design.
Still it will be good to have the RCZ on a new platform. Hopefully at last some of the known issues will finally be addressed as well...
I also look forward to the new design, but still expect it to have current 308 elements in its front design which I don't think is a bad thing.

I don't think the RCZ will change much in its design. Why change what is already a gorgeous looking car? Look at Porsche and the 911 or the Maxda MX5 - both have barely changed over their entire lifespan. There is no point in changing for changing sake as these cars have proved.

So what is the third?

Well...Pug are part owned by China's Dongfeng Motors these days so perhaps they have counted them...? :eusa-think:

They are not owned by Dongfeng, but the Chinese have a big share, but not the majority.

And the third brand is DS, obviously.

Maybe Peugeot should also consider having a premium brand in case they don't succeed in improving the Peugeot brand image.
I think that DS has been quite a success, but then again the Citroen brand image was weaker than that of Peugeot.

A premium brand of Peugeot would never work. They sell way too few cars for that as it is.

Good to hear about the RCZ tho I'll be waiting to see what it looks like!

Im sure they will use their icockpit, their new trademark three lines in the rear lights to represent a lions claw, the headlights that the new models have. It should look quite good as long as the body shape doesnt change too much.

The real proof of the pudding is when Audi launch a new look for its TT. It has relied on the badge to carry it through thus far with very small alterations.Pug created a nicer design but without the badge presteig which in the market they are playing in i s very important .Re the Porsche 911 and Mazda MX5, no comparison whatsoever with the RCZ as the 911 was and still is a real performance car and has the status so important when buying in this sector. The MX5 is a pastiche of an old Lotus design that has served them well over the years and is well due a proper replacement. So in summing up Pug will mess about with interiors etc while keeping an eye out for what Audi are doing. I just hope that they can replicate what they did with the RCZ for us all.

Re the Porsche and Mazda MX5 - I'm not mentioning performance, no-one has. I was merely stating that you don't need to change the look of a car just for change sake, as these two have proved. The Mazda MX5 is a great little sports car which handles really well. The same can also be said of the Porsche 911. They have both been around for years in these guises because THEY WORK !

I would only add that the Porsche is a top end car.Small cosmetic changes but mostly engine over the years.Mazda is an entry level sports car based on a very old design.Its basically a second car for most folk now.Not a first choice at all.Pug have to be careful that they dont fall into the same trap,that is,if it aint broke dont fix it.

Must admit I love the new TT design comes out end of the year, I may swap too the TT in 2016 will see, the new virtual cockpit is awesome, they should have had a touchscreen from mk2 RCZ. I love my RCZ so economical for a sports car so will be interested in the new one, but think we could be waiting till mid 2016.

I love my phone, tablet etc and each to his own but a touchscreen in a car is a huge deal breaker for me Give me something tactile and with a clicky resistance any day. Touch screens are too sensitive in a car when going over bumps, I really disliked the one in the 208 courtesy cars I've had. Maybe it's just me :?

I agree with you there to a point. Touch screen is great for setting up and fiddling with secondary controls but primary controls like volume and HVAC need to be physical. Touch screen is not suited to interactions out of direct sight and take longer (in terms of eyes off the road) to carry out when driving then it does using physical ever present buttons.
