Forgive me, but what does an LSD do? I know its a diff, that limits slip, but I dont understand what that means

Hectic read. To summarize, when you park your car with one wheel on the dirt, and one wheel on the tar, and you drop the clutch, the wheel on the dirt will spin all the power away as power is sent to the wheel with least grip.

Now, if you limit the slip between the two wheels (enter limited slip diff) the moment the one wheel spins faster than the other wheel, the diff electronically or mechanically (depending on the type of diff) limit the slip differences between the two shafts, optimizing available grip.

Cant believe i found a video that shows how it works LOL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-rQTHMVAuw

In the video you will see the Limited slip diff performs much better than the open diff. Modern LSD units can send up to 100% of the power to the wheel with most traction so it should work like the Eaton unit displayed in the video.

This video explains better. You will also understand why you cant just lock the diff for everyday driving.

What do you mean? :D People over here usually weld the diffs when they wanna go drift with old Volvos or cars like that. Works fine but the biggest issue is tire wear.

They also do that in the UK for banger racing.
