The only problem with a cover is if the car gets wet during use it will stay wet under the cover and then the cover will also be wet and will take some drying out now the U.K weather is turning. Couple this with freezing temp's as Winter sets in, a cover could be more trouble than it's worth.

If you type into ebay rcz regulator there's a bloke who refurbs your item . Very good work and a quick turnaround. I see your in Ireland so may take longer . Easy enough to DIY regards removal and re fitting

Has your car had a battery change that you know of? I'm clutching at straws here , the only thing i can think back to with mine was prior to a new battery mine was fine, but i cant be totally sure how long after doing so my problems started, so don't know if it's related or not
