Mini did not stop using the engine in 2009. He's getting mixed up with an older engine that was significantly worse.
The R is the one with potential for longer-term investment. You'll need to find a good one and not overpay for it just now.

They are fine on the first set of pads, but they will be corroding and the chrome coating breaking up. Push the pistons back in for the next set of pads and you'll have issues.
They need rebuilt with stainless pistons.
I was going to say it might be the chrome coating peeling off, but there is also a big dent or burn on the trim around the gearstick.
The engine bay looks really clean. All the nuts and bolts look corrosion free.

Are you on 18" or 19" wheels? Smaller diameter wheels with larger profile tyres will help.
Some brand of tyres also have softer sidewalls if you want to stick with the wheels you've got.
The black one at £16,499 has popped back up at the same dealer. I think they must be pulling them down and then back up to make them look like they've just been listed. Autotrader has the dates on the advert. Also when an advert is relisted it still shows further down the most recent list...
