Hello there,
Do you have to raise or move the engine to be able to replace the timing chain in a 156 petrol engine MK2 ?
Thanks, Ian

Hi Ian, no you don’t but you have to remove the engine mounting so a trolley jack is required to steady the engine, also a good quality brand of timing tools are required to lock the engine correctly.

Try changing just the tensioner, the rattle will probably disappear at a much lower cost.

I only ask because I got the car back after the timing chain was replaced. Now the exhaust is blowing by the manifold and the car is down on power has anyone got any ideas as to what is causing the lack of power?
Also the engine management light came on but my diagnostic tool doesn’t register a fault.

Surely they didn't mount the chain correctly, they skipped a tooth on a sprocket, some camshaft works out of phase.

Go back to the shop where they did it and have it fixed, the repairs are guaranteed.
