VVT Actuator Failure & Turbo Pipe Sealer came off

Not used the car much over the last 18 months, in fact since buying the car new back in Oct 2010 I've actually lost more in pounds in depreciation than I've done in miles in the actual car  The car has roughly done about 11400 miles, which averages about 3800miles/year.

Anyway started using it again for commuting to work and last monday morning sitting in the inside lane cruise control on 60mph. Completely out of the blue the dreaded engine failure repair needed message came up (not the first time ever) and this time it didn't disappear and then went into limp home mode.

After a day at the dealership, they managed to pull out the following codes:
P1062 & P1030 - VVT System - turned out to be a faulty VVT actuator
P2074 & P0104 - Air flow faults - turned out to be the turbo pipe sealer had come off & was drawing in air

Replacement of these items came in at a whopping £575! Lucky it came in under warranty because apparently you could look to double that price if it were a retail job.

But what annoys the most was that there was no root cause analysis done, why completely out of the blue had several hundred pounds of unexpected repairs been necessary, but I got no answer.

I'm seriously thinking of german, diesel and used. Ho hum

I'm thinking of definitely taking out a Peugeot extended warranty when mine runs out in Feb!

I'll be going for one too. I had considered using warranty direct when the time came but reviews are decidedly mixed. Third party ones may be a bit of a gamble but I have plenty of time yet to shop around.

Peugeot one - you can buy online and it looks reasonably priced.

I don't blame you for being upset at all, but I would suggest you browse the forums of any car regardless of make/model to see what issues other cars have before making any purchase.

I find the whole "German is best" thing to be based more on marketing hype than everyday reality. A girl I know has had some horrific bills for her TT. And a friend's neighbor who's TT (as it happens) was in the garage for the first 4 of its 6 months won't touch Audi again. I don't think she has made the right decision, but I can't blame her.

The engine in the RCZ is the same as used in the BMW Mini Cooper too so essentially the faults you've experienced weren't Peugeot specific.

I'm glad you got your car sorted under warranty and I guess the point I'm making is don't assume the grass is greener elsewhere, do some research on other forums and make an informed decision :)

Just so you know, Peugeot will only offer an extended warranty while you are still in the warranty period so best leave enough time as I will be doing the same

Maybe if you had driven the car more during the warranty period :eusa-think: there may have been certain symptoms of this happening you never know, :eusa-think:

That's a fair point, guess I'm just a bit hacked off that the internal combustion engine has been around for over a hundred years and yet with all the technological advances made and they still couldn't tell me why these parts had failed. Just old and grumpy.

Yup, again another fair point, but circumstances changed and I swapped from a 10min drive to 4hrs round trip commute via the joy of public transport. Although to be fair it beat sitting in a motorway car park every morning.

Good to know. I'll do it before I take it in for a service and it's first MOT in Jan!
