Mrrizzle you are welcome. I cannot give details but my company works very closely with refineries, and our employees work on most of the UK refinery sites.

I personally have seen tankers emblazoned with major petrochem supplier logos, filling up from storage tanks that were used by tankers carrying supermarket logos, only a few minutes earlier.

The only real difference is the RON value (see excellent explanation earlier in thread).

It's the same fuel at the same RON, correct - however, different additives are mixed in.

Supermarket fuel lorrys come from exactly the same refinaries as those lorries going to 'premier' fuel garages. It's the same fuel!

That is correct it is the same base fuel that supplies all perol forecourts but its the additives that make the difference , these are added when they leave the depot.
Supermarket fuel doesnt have so many additives as the other companies, cleaning agents,smell,anti foaming etc.

Yes and no. Yes, they do come from the same refineries. Hardly surprising as that is where it is refined and stored. No. It is not the same, as a many chefs can bake a cake using the same ingredients, doesn't mean that the finished product will look the same or taste the same. Different recipes produce different products despite using the same ingredients. Branded fuels have their own "recipes" which are closely guarded secrets and will involve the addition of different additives to give different benefits and features and added at different percentages.
You get what you pay for basic from supermarket and premium from the branded.

Honestly, how much of a difference does it make?! Especially to a car such as ours. We are sharing the same basic engine as a mini cooper or a Citroen DS3 and I can't imagine that any the drivers of them are that bothered about the supermarket vs "premium" fuel debate. I don't think that they are any less informed. I, myself, don't profess to have great knowledge on the topic but we aren't driving extremely high powered performance engines and I find it hard to believe that there is anything but a negligible difference in fuel from either a supermarket or the likes of Shell/BP etc. it's still the same octane after all. Again, I am prepared to stand corrected on this but I'd want to see some hard facts showing me that it makes a noticeable difference. However, this appears to show me as being entirely correct in my thinking. Basically, it's a loss leader for supermarkets who use it to entice you into the store and, unless you are using their "special" fuel which has some additives...it's exactly the same...and that comes from the mouth of the petrol retailers association.

I use nothing but supermarket petrol and my MPG is really good. Averaged 40mph since January and over the last month average is 42mpg. Not bad for a wee petrol don't you think ?
