Timing chain tensioner

Hi guys, took my 2012 mark 1 1.6 petrol in for it's interim service at 45,000 and it sailed through, happy days!

However since then, my mirrors have been making a funny noise on closing, anybody else had issues like that?

Anyway that's the least of my worries a couple of days ago my engine sounded funny on cold start and it has been idling at about 1100 rpm and sounding a bit rattly. Drives fine but obviously I was worried.

Took it to a Peugeot dealer the guy said right away that's the timing chain tensioner, he said I'd be looking at about £700 [FEARFUL FACE][FEARFUL FACE]

I got aftermarket warranty with it when I bought it, would it be covered?

The garage it's going in to be looked at said the timing chain was recently done on it, should the tensioner have been changed with it?

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Scott, I've had no problems with my mirrors but I suppose they do creak a bit now and then, as for the timing chain issue I know that when this problem first reared its ugly head on these engines Peugeot were trying to get away with just changing the tensioner on its own as this was the route of the problem. If it had been left too long the chain could get damaged / streatched then the guides which are made from a thin plastic started cracking or breaking up. So i would say its unusual just to have had the chain changed and nothing else, there is now a new design of tensioner and a new beefed up guide set so all should be changed together. Another thing that most don't know is that your dipstick runs through the right hand chain guide so every time you check your oil you are potentially putting pressure on the guide, but in a catch 22 the oil level is critical in these engines keeping them topped up is a must and even a new style timing kit can fail if you run your oil low.
You should get the full job done for £500-£600 only let Peugeot or a specialist do the work.

As standard they'll replace just the minimum. Better off using a specialist than a dealer to be hoest, if you're paying for it.

The garage have had the car all weekend. They can't find a fault, they've reset a load of codes and they've taken on it two road tests.

I mentioned I'd spoken to Peugeot about it being the tensioner, he said why would that cause a high tick over.

They're giving it me back tomorrow, the warranty company won't do anything without a fault being diagnosed. The garage say there's nothing more they can do.

Could it be anything else?

The high engine idle (around 1100-1200 rpm) is normal when ambient temperatures are mild, that's the coke start mode. If it rattles though, almost sounding like a diesel, then it's chain/guides issue.

The timing chain rattle will possibly only be heard for the first 10 or 15 seconds on cold startup due to warm weather it may not even be noticeable unless its bad. If a Peugeot technician has heard it and said it's the timing chain that's rattling then look no further it's just a battle to prove it to you dealer and warranty company.
