Replacing the stereo head unit - Loss of functions?

Hi,

I have seen many interesting discussions on this forum regarding the replacement of the cd head unit with a double din unit and it's compatability.

However by simply upgrading the single-din with an aftermarket single-din unit, will this again have the same loss of functions with the steering wheel controls etc etc... ?

If you change the factory head unit you will loose some functions as several things are run via the head unit. If I remember correctly on the other threads there was talk of using an adaptor wiring harness/switch/box of magic thing that allowed the functions to be accessed.
