Ok. So just to confirm... 1.6 THP has a VVT solenoid and a separate Cam sensor 👍

Pretty sure it's 2 vvt solenoids.
Been informed it's 2 VVT solenoids for the 200 THP but just one for the 156. But again is there a separate electrical cam sensor on the 156?

The VVT (back of the engine) does indeed work via oil pressure as you can see the valves in it when you take it out. The Cam sensor on a 156 is at the top of the rocker cover on the right hand side. That works via a magnetic contact at the bottom of the sensor that correlates with the lobes at the end of the Inlet cam shaft (not the valve lobes). The Pinking/Knock sensor is right at the back of the engine under the inlet manifold.

Have you checked after doing the rocker cover gasket that all the pipes are on the PCV on both sides inlet on the right and outlet on the left ? loose or poor conection of these after doing the rocker cover can also throw up some mad codes. Lets face you shouldnt need to go digging around too much youve only changed a gasket and removed the rocker cover. So you may need to look at what youve removed and to do that job you will have removed:-
  • PCV pipes
  • Camshaft sensor
  • Turbo pipe to Intercooler
  • Small (tiny pipe) breather at the back of the rocker cover right hand side with a tube to the throttle body

Definately only one VVT on a 156 on the inlet camshaft side. Yes there is a seperate Camshaft sensor too and again its on the Inlet Camshaft at the opposite end of the camshaft to the VVT.

Engine oil ?? P0016- possibilities Variable valve timing is oil critical aka filthy oil means a fucked up system
VVT solenoid intake (Bank -1 intake)
Cam position sensor (Bank-1 intake)
Crank position sensor (Bank-1 intake)
Engine timing fluctuates because ECU is on overtime trying to keep ahead of the above faults
Last but not least the above relate to or can be directly caused by shit in the oil & pumped around the engine?

Have all those codes been wiped off the ECU ? Once the ECU has detected a fault & you rectify it you need to scan the car to delete the fault message for any new sensor fitted as its possibly it may still be sending out the wrong fault code messages sometimes they take a little time to readjust however if a you have had major persistent issues the software can in fact corrupt itself in the ECU?
Alternately I may be wrong but as you still have got P0016 its a case of the no coherence between Crank (Engine speed ) sensor & the inlet camshaft sensor that means the ECU is sensing the timing is incorrect when the engine is running & causes could point to a stretched chain directly due to component failing faults or running with low oil levels which can damage the VVT system one way the Peugeot techs do it is rocker off & fit timing pins to check for chain stretch tolerances like this knackered one
