Hi, my hdi has an oil leak at the back of the engine that is small but leaking on to the exhaust and causing burnt oil fumes in the vehicle, I took it to the garage and they tell me I am best going to a Peugeot specialist as it is above the manifold and not easy to get at. Any ideas what it could be? Is there a pipe there that is easy to get at? Only thing I can think of is cam cover gasket gone? Is this a common problem, I can't seem to find much info about oil leaks here or burnt oil fumes in the vehicle?

Don't know on the diesel engine there is the coolant feed which runs around the back to the water pump but the only oil system on that side is for the oil level sensor which sounds like it too low down to be leaking?

Having looked over the weekend I'm not entirely sure it's coming from the back of the engine? Difficult to see if cam cover is leaking as there is not much room and a heat sheild in the way. The back is oily but the burnt oil smell when your head is under the bonnet seems to be coming from between the engine and battery, not sure what could be causing a burnt oil smell there? Can't see any smoking? Only thing I can think of might be an emission leak that has an oily smell?

The burnt oil smell is normally oil that has leaked onto the exhaust system & any leak from the pipes internally is rare under the bonnet years ago it was the exhaust manifold gasket that caused it to happen releasing fumes into the engine bay

Jusy wondering if it might be a crankcase breather leaking fumes, would that possibly give a burnt oil smell?

Crankcase breather would smell of oil vapour & if its leaking you would see oil residues on the engine covers etc

Ok, so today I've investigated further, checked back of engine with torch and inspection mirror and I can't see any oil leaking above the exhaust manifold, the heat shield is totally dry. So l then removed the cover over the injectors, not as clean in there as l was expecting, the entire compartment is coated in burnt oil, have attached picture, but this all appears to be dry and baked on? Just cleaning the inside of the lid took a can of egr cleaner! Can't see any leaks or smoke with the engine hot and running. So not really sure what has caused this? possible previous problem? This maybe causing the smell in the car? Another problem I've found is an oil leak, picture attached, from the throttle body, could this be given a burnt oil smell in the car and what is causing a leak here?20220314_170416.jpg20220314_173007.jpg20220314_172946.jpg

Looks more like old oil to me, l don't think diesel would go like this, but can't quite understand how it would be covered everywhere?

It could be Oil vapours which over time cause a thick coating of sludge you may have a engine breather pipe split open?

Thanks, l did look but couldn't find that much for the diesel version, cheers for all the advice. Do you know of any sites for parts where you can see full schematics?

I think you might be better buying a emanual off ebay or other sites you just download it & everything is stored on file for you to reference for faults etc I have one for the petrol engines covers all models its OK for £10 but saying that I have been messing with cars for over 40 yrs so I I have a fair bit of mechanical background
