Hi new to this forum as am thinking of purchasing an RCZ .I always liked the look ,its a bit more exiting than a TT and less Girly

Anyway looked at 2 cars both 1.6 petrol one a 10 plate the other 11, test drove one and was very impressed ,but i here stories of this engine running rough and a serious timing chain design fault .Is it really as bad as i here on this forum ?

I used to work in a peugeot dealership and 4 and half years ago i purchased a 308 hdi ,and must admit to not having much in the way of problems .Front suspension spring broke both replaced under warranty ,and an earth fault in the rear indicators that should of gone back on a recall. The car car has bee reliable with the engine being the best part of it .Is very smooth for a diesel and very nippy ,take off like the proverbial

Its been such a good car allbeit a bit bland but practical ,that i am in two minds whether to get rid only to take on problems

Many thank Mark

To be honest if you can find one with a new chain and tensioners they're not much trouble.

Although it's not that expensive a job.

Mines just had it all done. Averages 38/39 mpg and is a lot of fun.

Yeh but of the two i have seen one had 40k the other 45k surly you shouldnt be getting problems like that at low mileage

My 308 is an 07 car with 107k and still runs sweet

Is there any way of checking if its ever been done ?

Thanks Mark

Yes, if it sounds like a diesel/bag of spanners when started from cold then quietens down after 30 seconds (ish) it's not been changed and needs to be!

Don't know how to tell if it's been changed or not if running fine though. Maybe somebody else will have the answer to that.

The timing kit, chain/tensioner/guides on early petrol RCZs were definitely a cause for concern which Peugeot should have held their hands up and done a recall, lots were replaced under warranty and lots weren’t especially when out of warranty. New updated parts are now available to hopefully sort the problem and on early cars especially the ages and mileage’s you’ve been looking at they will have already been replaced. Any forum for any make of car will throw up common problems and make things sound worse than they actually are so just go armed with the knowledge this site will give you and go and buy one of the most beautiful cars for not a lot of money and enjoy

Yes that’s right, timing chain is on the left hand side of the engine the kit itself isn’t that expensive but must be done buy a specialist. BMW Mini and Citroen all use this engine so there are many specialist repairers conversant with this repair. You shouldn’t be paying more than £600 fully fitted

If you're thinking of buying a diesel then you should be OK the chain etc was a problem on the petrol MK1 mainly with a few reporting on MK2's.
But has already been posted, with those kind of mileages you refer to, they will most likely have already been replaced long before this. As for a record, the owner will be the best to talk to or it might be within the cars service history.
you compare to your 308 HDi with minor issues, the same can be said of the RCZ HDi, these engines are almost bullet proof.

Unless there is some bills in the service history or you can check peugeot service computers you will never .The dealer that selling it say there is service history, but that doesnt mean much as far as chain goes .Always thought the idea of going back to chain is its more reliable and should outlast the car or at least 100000 miles

I dont think diesel is the way diesel is the way to go now with the goverment taking the ##ss ,

I wouldn't be bullied by government or anyone else for that matter - they can go s***w themselves.
there will be another crisis soon and diesels will be in flavour again, anyway modern diesels aren't the problem.
It is such a con when you consider other economies around the world and look at their pollution levels, ours in context are much much lower already. I am not advocating no action towards pollution, it just has to be taken in context that's all.

Totally agree .The UK is the do gooder of the planet. It doesnt matter what the uk does for the enviroment ,if the big countries dont do the same it aint going to make the slightest bit of difference

Its just another way of getting money out of the minions

Also on the mk2 what was done different to rectify the problem ?

As far as I know, the MK2 should have the stronger chain guide fitted as standard. I have the R and haven't heard of any problems related to chain on this models engine and I think only a handful of people have mentioned problems on the MK2 with chain / guides. It wasn't really the chain it was the guide tensioner and it was made from inferior materials and to weak, once this broke then the chain rattled about without any tension. I am sure this was rectified in the MK2.

Hope that helps a little.

The tensioner fitted to the MkII was a modified part (which sparks the question, If Peugeot acknowledges that the part needed modifying, how come they didn’t either recall all the MkI’s & replace the part FOC or do a free replacement via a “notice” to dealers when a MkI came in with the inevitable fault?)
Anyway, when the tensioner failed on MkI’s it was replaced with a modified one, so it was less likely to fail again.

There is a post on here somewhere that shows what the modified bolt heads look like as they are slightly different from the original ones so you can tell if the part has been replaced, but I can’t find it at the moment.

I agree that with the mileage on the two cars in question, they will probably have already had the part replaced, but it is wise to check the paperwork or just ask the owner/previous owner.

It should always be realised that reading these pages gives a false impression about RCZ’s reliability as almost every question is relating to an issue, whereas almost nobody posts on here to tell us how reliable their car is. In reality RCZ’s are no less reliable than most cars, and probably more reliable than some.

All I know is driving an RCZ gives a feeling that I haven’t experienced with any of my previous cars. Park it in a busy car park & have a quick look round and see how many other cars stand out as being “special”.

The only problem I’ve got with mine is, it’s older now than I usually keep cars, but I honestly can’t see another car that I would be prepared to swap it for (unless the price of Aston Martins suddenly takes a dramatic fall ;) )

If you really like the car then just buy it and replace chain, you'll be good for another 80k miles or so  It will cost like 5% of RCZ price :? That shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Chains clatter, not tick.
Obviously the noise will be from the timing gear end of the engine. If you can start it from cold it will definitely help.

They aren't a quiet engine by any
means, but the clattering sound is fairly easy to identify.

Mine was done at 60k.
Chain, guides, tensioners and VVT sprockets.

Yes that’s the post that shows the bolt heads. As for visible differences between Mk1/2 the most obvious is the front, MkI’s having inset front fog lights, MkII’s have led drl’s. A quick google images will soon show what I mean.
