My HDi is not well

Today after an initial problem free journey,my RCZ diesel struggled to start to come home.I got it started but on my journey it struggled with a mis-fire type problem and lack of acceleration. About 3 miles from home the engine management system light came on.
My dealer is 60 miles away, but I phoned roadside assitance who will be with me in a couple of hours.
The warning sign STOP in red now comes on if I try to start the engine.... anyone had similar problems or have any ideas ?

Have you filled up recently? Sometimes a dodgy batch of fuel can cause this and don't take this the wrong way but you didn't put unleaded in mistake? I did this once but realised half way through filling up. The HDi is sooo good sometimes I forget its a diesel :)

that is what I have done :x ,22 litres added to a quater full tank, ran the car for about 25 miles,garage dont expect a problem. :brickwall:

Just so happens I am a marine diesel engineer :)

Basically, you could run a diesel engine on a mixture of petrol (gasoline) and diesel at a ratio of 10:90 max. In areas where it's VERY cold, you can use either Kerosene or Petrol to help improve the operation of the engine.

The problem is NOT with damage to injectors, pumps or seals, it's damage caused by the shock waves from the very sharp rise in pressure when the petrol is injected into the cylinder. Petrol doesn't particularly like being subjected to the resulting temperatures and pressures of a compression ratio of 25:1 (for example)! The resulting damage will most likely damage the bearings, the piston, and you may even blow a head gasket (which is designed to be the weak point so that it blows rather than anything else) Modern cars won't like it because they quite often utilise multi-shot injection. This means that prior to the main fuel charge, a smaller charge is injected to prepare the cylinder (raising the temperature and reducing the ignition delay). If you consider the advanced injection timing, and what will essentially a 'rich' fuel mixture... You can probably tell it's not going to be good!

It is in the garage today, where they will empty the fuel, flush out and change filter then top up with diesel, they dont expect to find damage as I only did a gently driven 30 miles... lets hope they are right.

recon it will bee ok, the petrol will float on top of the derv, so very little should have fed through to the engine.good luck.

I am sure you will be just fine as a gentle 30 miles wouldnt cause damage. Best of luck!

Glad it was a relatively simple problem to resolve and was pure User Error :oops:

When I first had the car, was at the Pump pressing the nozzle with nothing happening.
All of a sudden, loud voice though the Tannoy telling me I'd picked up a Diesel Pump.
Absolutely sh....err jumped out of my skin.

Pointed at the Pump mouthing to the Cashier that it "was okay, it's a Diesel Car".
Cashier wouldn't activate the pump. Had to go in to the shop to explain before she'd activate the pump.

I suppose it was a good gesture from her really, after all if I'd have got it wrong, I'd have to come on this Forum and tell you All :eusa-whistle: ;) :eusa-shhh:


The HDI does seem to be the most robust out of the three models - as you would expect with a Diesel.
Pleased "we're" not going down with any engine troubles :thumbup:

Thanks for the support, my car is away again tonight as the dealer didnt have a fuel filter in stock..... hopefully tomorrow :clap:

I got my RCZ back today, it is driving fine, empty,filter change flush out and top up £300, just happy no engine damage

This is one of the reasons i didnt choose for diesel,,, because i knew that sooner or later this would happen to me... especially if i go in the morning when im still in sleep mode.... although i think that the thrill of driving the RCZ will work better then a liter of coffee

Wow, that's a bit steep. Engine flush-outs for this sort of problem are usually £100.

Glad you're sorted though and back enjoying the :auto-car:

i always treble check when filling up as i have also done it with a van. rac towed it in and the work was covered by them, i had to pay for the waste fuel to bee disposed of £80.
