HELP!!!

Hi everyone,

Just joined the forum now this moment.

But need help and guidance please?
I have a June 12 plate RCZ that I bought from Perrys a Peugeot dealer in Milton Keynes in March this year. It had 19000 miles on the clock and I paid for an extended two years warranty on it.
The dealer said that all their second hand cars are given a full service before they are sold and was assured that my car was serviced before the sale. However 4 months later the oil warning top up light comes on and I had to top up the engine oil with a full litre of fluid. It turns out that they didn't service the car but based the need for one on their records of the previous owner. Four months into owning the car their service department calls me to advise that the car is due for a service! Not only that but I had to nag them for the invisible log book that was missing, which I had to buy from them and get it stamped for the first service! :x
The car has only done 24800 miles now.
A few days ago I noticed a very loud rattling noise coming from the engine whilst driving especially when starting from cold and this noise would persist for at least ten minutes until the engine got warmed up. So I contacted Perrys and took the car to them to have a look at what the problem is. They reported back saying its the Timing Chain that is faulty and started quoting silly numbers down the phone of over a £1000 to fix it. After reminding them that I took out the extra warranty they are now enquiring whether its covered by the warranty. I'm still waiting for an answer on this.

Is there a known problem with the Timing Chain on these cars? :?
I have been advised that NO WAY should a Timing Chain be faulty with such a low mileage or by wear and tear.

Col

Any advise out there?

Timing chain issues are well known on this 'Prince' engine series. Various Minis, Citröen and Peugeot cars that use this engine - in all its power output guises have suffered from this kind of issue since around 2008.

Search both the Internet and this forum for more information. Many owners have had this issue fixed under warranty. For example, my old 207 gti was fixed for timing chain issues.

Do a bit of research, go back to your dealer and tell them to fix it. Mention Trading Standards office, the Small Claims Court and the Sale of Goods & Service Act 1974 (as amended) at suitable points in the conversation if you have to but start quietly and diplomatically, insisting that they resolve this.

Hi col-pet :greetings-wavingblue:

Sorry to hear of your woes and I agree with the points raised by the previous Forum member.
Firstly take a look at your MBI (Mechanical Breakdown Insurance) policy or "warranty" as you referred to it as. Personally I hate the word "warranty" as with extended warranties its just a colloquial term for an MBI which is an insurance policy that covers certain component items should they suffer (complete) failure. Most MBI's cover premature wear leading to a component failure and better ones also cover certain wear and tear, and therefore most importantly do not require the faulty component to actually cease working before a claim under the policy can be made. Arm yourself by looking at your MBI policy schedule which will state what is and what is not covered as opposed to simply letting the Dealer tell you what is. Research the cam chain tensioner issue on this forum so that you are able to advise the dealer and if necessary Peugeot as to the particular issue that your Z' has prematurely developed and of which you know there are known issues !!

ALSO, talking of vague terms that are often used and that is a "Full Service" as it is akin to 'as long as a piece of string' what you always need to ask/ enquire is what was carried out as more often than not when buying a used car from a dealer main or independent it means running it through their workshop to ensure that its road worthy (i.e. a legal requirement), it meets their particular minimum standard, and that hopefully it has an oil and filter change AT MINIMUM !!

.the big blue (..a Forum back bencher who firmly believes that 'Knowledge Is Power' so arm yourself wisely) !

It had 19k on the clock when you bought it, which was coming to its 20k/ 2 year service (whichever is sooner) schedule, so they should have serviced it. Arm yourself with this information as well as the fact that they told you they always give a full service to their cars.

You have received some good advice from the two previous posters so you have plenty to arm yourself to take back to the dealer.

On another note. I bought my R from the same dealer and I found them to be excellent.

Hi Chaps,

Thanks for the advice,

I have just got of the phone to the dealer and as expected they say that warranty have declined the costs to repair my car.
They say I need to provide a full service history before they continue. Based on the fact I wasn't provided a service book with the car and had to ask as well as pay for one months later, and the fact they didn't service it as it transpires it seems a convenient excuse to not complete the work under warranty. They are now quoting £800 + vat to fix.
They also are saying that the fault on the timing chain is down to wear and tear !!!
I have already got onto Peugeot Relations to log a complaint and will wait to see what happens.

WHAT A NIGHTMARE !!!

Sounds like your dealer is squirming out of the job and it doesn't look like you have much grounds to fight them
On but don't give up. Rattle a few cages in Peugeot HQ and see if they can assist.

Hi' col-pet :greetings-wavingblue:

..it seems like you have the typical "dealer-warranty company-YOU" situation with you stuck in the middle. Like I mentioned before you need to look at the terms & conditions of your MBI aka warranty schedule document to see where you stand. :eusa-think:
Am I right in assuming that your MBI is with an independent third party MBI company due to the age of the vehicle just as mine currently is ?? If so you may find that Peugeot Customer relations may not be that helpful and state that the matter is between You and the MBI company and does not concern them directly. With regard to the Dealer servicing or NOT servicing your Z' when you purchased it do you have anything in writing as to their intention or completion OR was it just a verbal given by the sales person around the time of purchase ??

.the big blue (heres hoping that you're able to later provide a positive outcome to your current woe. Don't give up !)

Oh my god, get rid of it! The exact same thing happened to mine, I had it from new and the timing chain went at 25000miles!! Also the sensor which was making the car overheat went but both of these are a common problem.
It was going to cost £1200 but after massive arguments I paid £300 which is still a joke as it had only been out of warranty for 3 weeks!!
These cars look gorgeous and are real head turners but I've had endless bother with mine and I eventually got rid last week
I would never get another.
Moved on To the Mercedes slk now and I feel very content with my decision to get rid.
Good luck

I appreciate Michelleh's point, and if it is her decision to "get rid" of her car when it develops a fault then of course that's fine, if that's how she chooses to deal with it.

I personally think that if you own a car you have to almost expect that at some time during its lifetime it is likely to have some problem or another. If you are unlucky the problem might be major rather than minor, and if you are very unlucky you might have more than one problem.

I know that there are many owners of RCZ's that have never had any probelms, or just very minor issues, and that there are others that have had something major occurred then after having that problem sorted, they have had trouble free motoring there on.

I think it is all too easy to think from reading this forum that most RCZ's have problems. The thing is of course, only a small proportion of RCZ owners are actually forum members, and of those, it's the ones with problems that tend to post a lot, so you don't actually get a full picture of the proportion of RCZ's that have major issues, it's just easy to jump to the conclusion from reading this forum that most RCZ's have a lot of major issues, which I am certain is not the case.

My personal experience is that after a years ownership I have had a couple of minor issues that could have applied to any car on the market, and I certainly wouldn't let the experience of others sway my opinion about my car. I have owned cars for the last 40 years, and I have certainly had many cars that have had a lot more problems than my RCZ. I have also had others that have not had any problems whatsoever.

I agree that at some point you might want to say enough is enough, but my personal opinion is that you should try your best to get the issue dealt with, and only as a very last resort you should think of changing the car. Maybe if you just decide quickly to get rid, then the car wasn't really right for you in the first place.

Just my thoughts :eusa-think:
