Potentially silly question. It has been many years since I last drove a diesel car. Do I still have to turn the ignition to '1' and wait for glow plugs to heat up before I start the engine in my HDi RCZ? I've been doing it because it's what I have been taught but I wonder if it is still necessary?

Yes that is correct as glow plugs will need to warm up before you turn ignition on fully and start up.
Drive safe and stay lucky 🍀

For Scotland, I would guess most cold starts you shuld wait.
However, those of us in warmer climes need not for most of the year.
Similarly, if the engine is still warm (short stay) just fire up immediately.
