First thoughts on the RCZ

Thought I would re-post this in a more appropriate part of the forum

I was given the keys to the car yesterday after signing the necessary liability forms from my wife  , lol, we had a quick blast around the backroads between Reading and Henley. Have to say it is a cracking little car. This is the first time I have been able to drive it properly as my wife had been having the test drives. First thoughts, certainly very fast, slightly bumpy, sorry sportier ride but I was expecting this coming out of the A7. The engine is truly a peach and the gearbox in this car is matched perfectly. Does anyone know if the gearbox is sourced or developed in partnership with BMW as well as the engine?, I am guessing that it was just the engine that was developed with BMW, if not then full credit to Peugeot for developing a cracking gearbox.

Seems strange but the car has nearly as much tech kit as my A7, even down to the option of having the onboard WiFi. I have a data plan for my own car but I am hardly using it at the moment but it is a nice to have just in case. The performance of the JBL stereo is superb, a close match to the BOSE system in my A7.

The seats are very supportive and the adjustment is great and I was surprised by the headroom provided by the double bubble roof. Even though I am 6' tall I can get in and out easily enough but the roof line is very low but that's what gives the car the appeal. We both noticed that we were getting admiring glances in the RCZ as we were driving around today, then again it does look quite stunning in the matt finish. We have already come up with a plan of attack in terms of trying to keep the car relatively clean, just common sense things such as trying not to park under trees, keep it garaged at home when possible and Magica's work car park is underground as well.

The finish inside the car is excellent and it has alot of nice touches however the only criticism would be lack of storage space. Am I right in thinking that the black box in the passenger glovebox with the three video cable sockets is the hard-drive/multimedia system?

Finally, no rattles or squeaks to speak of, can't say that about my A7 which has had an annoying quiet rattle in the boot from new, but you get use to it.

Next challenge will be trying to get the RCZ and the A7 into the garage, not easy as they are both relatively wide cars. Just need to find a buyer for my wife's old Corsa now :eusa-think: , in the meantime by car stays outside on the drive lol

These are just my initial thoughts and I am sure I will be able to provide more comments as we get further into our ownership experience

nice choice of cars Phantom, hope you have fun in your wife's RCZ and welcome to the forum.

and glad to see that you really like the RCZ like we all do on here. You are definitely right about it being really good value for money considering the fun you get with it, the equipment and the looks.

Out of curiosity how do you find the Audi A7 my father is collecting his own later this week?

Thanks for the welcome tomy90  It is good to be part of a crowd which has such enthusiasm for what they drive, I have been a member of a couple of other forums and the quality of posts is no where near what I have seen on here !

The RCZ and A7 are two very different cars serving different markets as you would expect, BUT they share a few common things between them. They are a rare sight on our roads, they defy the norms for car design and certainly stand out in the crowd and they have a great level of tech kit when compared to other cars on the market. I have a diesel engine in the A7 but it is matched perfectly to the auto gearbox, in the same way as the engine in our RCZ is mated perfectly with the gearbox, oh and did I mention trying to look after and clean the cars, I am sure I have developed OCD since I took delivery of my car and with the Asphalt I am sure this will only get worse now  . The end result though is that both cars offer high levels of driver involvement and of course satisfaction. Your father certainly won't be disappointed with his decision to go for the A7, mine is 3.0TDi Sline Quattro in Phantom pearl black, with 20" 5 segment wheels, BOSE stereo, privacy glass and tech pack which includes Google Earth based satnav and a head up display. Here is a quick pic of the beast after I had her professionally detailed last August.

Gorgeous glossiness on that A7 Phantom. OCD certainly does kick in and yes you certainly do have your hands full with the matt paintwork on the RCZ.

Did you get the cleaning products from Peugeot for the Asphalt?

Be careful putting the RCZ in your garage. I have to fold my mirrors in to get it past the initial opening. A few weeks ago I wasn't concentrating fully as I should have been and forget to fold them in and scraped my new wing mirrors. I was not happy.

Happy motoring to you and Magica

Thanks RCZ1, the detailers applied a product called Glare to my car which is effectively a paint sealant. It helps to protect the paintwork and I don't need to polish it on a regular basis. Yes we did get a cleaning pack with the Asphalt, more or less brand new so that will keep us going for a few weeks. I have found other Matt paint materials over on Swissvax's website and another supplier in the U.S called Dr.Beasley's. Unfortunately our driveway is at a very slight angle to the garage which means Magica has to park at a slight angle in the garage. This makes it more difficult to get my car into the garage but fortunately we have a one large double door rather than two single doors. I thought we had a big garage until we got both of these cars lol ! We will have to get a triple garage in the next house

Yes I know that Swissvax have a number of matt paint products. Swissvax may be expensive but they certainly know how to make products. You can buy Swissvax products from Polished Bliss on line, who have free delivery on ALL items, if that helps you.

I'm a big fan of sealants. I've got them applied to both our cars and have been using them for over a year now. I just find they give a better finish than waxes (having said that I don't think you can beat a wax on a red car) and are less temperamental to use than waxes. The majority of sealants can also be used in cold and hot weather, which cannot be said for waxes.

Yes we keep saying we should have a triple garage. We are thinking of putting one right at the bottom of our garden, which could take one and would make life so much easier AND give me extra space for detailing.

You are right Marcus, I use Chemical Guy's products on my car, they do indeed offer a Matt detailer, I might have to give it a whirl. See HERE

Well just goes to show - I didn't actually know that Chemical Guys did matt products. Not actually seen that before, but then I wouldn't really be looking for it. I think most detailing suppliers are now offering products for matt paint these days as there is a growing demand.

Chemical Guys products are very good. I've never been disappointed by any I've used. They are all so easy to use.

Another one to consider is Gtechniq C1. This can be used on matt paintwork and to good effect. Also if done professionally guaranteed for 5 years.
