Engine rattle + heavy twitching while driving

Hey ya,

A little background info: blue 2012 automatic THP156. Bought it at dealer in 2015 March with 54 000 km on it and now it is at 67 500 km. It has been serviced at 11 700 km, 36 400 km and 54 300 km (when I bought it). All the maintenance have been done at Peugeot approved garages.

Here's my problem:

I've had some time the same engine rattle as many people seem to have on this forum (https://youtu.be/B3TvdAwnsbc took a video of mine). When cold starting RPM goes to 11-1200 and after minute or so it comes down to 800. In the past couple days it has gotten pretty bad as the whole engine seems to be shaking quite furiously. It might be hard to see on the video but whole car shakes because of it). For me the rattling doesn't quite stop there. Most of the time for the first 5 or so minutes I hear even louder rattle while driving (I feel like it comes on when the gearbox is about to change the gear).

Few days ago I noticed a heavy twitching while driving and RPM seem to be little bit unstable (for example tried driving on cruise for 85 km/h and it bounced up and down just a little bit). I could also describe it as a certain kind of pullback, the drive just isn't smooth as it is suppose to.

I was looking for advice what might be causing this before taking my car to garage to get looked at. I'm sorry if this message should be in some other chain or so. Also be noted every little help or advice is appreciated as my knowledge of cars is very limited as this is only my second card ever (the first one was quite a bit older and all the maintenance and fixing was always done at home). For example should I just go to nearest Peugeot approved garage or ask around places etc.

Please ask if you need me to clarify anything, English is my third language.

From Finland with Love :).

Wow! If English is your third language, you must be pretty good at the other two

First thing, the most obvious problem is more than likely the timing chain tensioner issue. I think that would be a very good place to start.

It's pointless replacing loads of expensive parts in the hope that it will cure the problem, might as well start with the cheapest & most common, and work from there.

It's possible that when they work on your car, more problems might be obvious to the trained eye - timing chain itself, possible gearbox problems.

As for where to go, that is a decision for you I think. I don't know how reliable or expensive Peugeot dealers in Finland are. In the UK, they do tend to be more expensive than indipendant garages, but they should know more about the regular issues your car might have.

Also, if the car has a Peugeot service history, it would keep that up, making it more desirable & worth more when you come to sell it.

Having said all that, if you know a reliable cheaper indipendant garage, I'm sure if you point them in the right direction, they will be able to sort it for you saving you money on Peugeot labour charges.

Someone on here with an automatic might have more knowledge of the symptoms you have described, but I would definitely think about starting with the timing chain tensioners & see if that solves everything. If not, work on from there.

That's 99% a rattling chain. You need to get the chain, tensioner and guides checked.

If revs are fluctuating near gear change I would check oil level of gearbox, as insufficient oil pressure maybe having an effect on the valve chest and the computers are talking to one another and the engine is trying to compensate.

I hate it when computers talk to each other. I feel like such a gooseberry :eusa-whistle:

Thanks a lot for answers!

At least to my understanding Peugeot offers road service in Finland (they send someone to try to fix the problem and in case they can't the car will be towed to closest Peugeot garage) if you have all your required maintenance done at Peugeot. But I don't think this kind of maintenance goes under this as it isn't a check up etc.?

There are 3 different Peugeot garages near me so tomorrow I will make some inquiries (at one of them I have had my dent/paint fixed after someone wrecked my door. Work was good but otherwise it was quite a hassle and hard to recommend them...).

Is this something I can check myself?

Hi, sorry to hear about your problems definitely cam chain tensioner/chain/ guides, but also its possible you have a damaged engine mount that would cause loads of vibration!.

Hope you get it sorted good luck.

Unfortunately I don't know too much about the gearbox so don't know if it a pour until overflow, or if there is a dipstick.

Information might be on Web somewhere.

Little update here: all the garages here have +3 week waiting times. I asked for the price of timing chain kit and they got back with 608€ just for the parts.
