Sounds like it might be the dreaded timing chain has reared its ugly head again. Have you ever had the tensioner replaced? It's a very well known issue, especially with mk1 RCZ's.

It is often accompanied with an engine management message, and/or limp mode.

Hi got mine done at 17k cost £550 at my local pug dealer but I know many have paid far more don't get ripped off shop about but it is a specialist job and you want the whole kit replacing new updated tensioner/ chain and guides. Mines been spot on since.

From reading on this forum, sadly, I don't think anyone has managed to rectify the problem by any tinkering, it's been a replacement thing I'm afraid. The replacement appears to be the modified part as fitted to the Mk2's, so once fitted it's sorted for good.
I also hear that most people have the complete kit, including chain, as well as the tensioner, but whether that is absolutely necessary, I can't say.
I do know that there are many on here that have had this done, so I'm sure someone with greater knowledge on the subject can advise further.
